Bucky blows out a breath as he looks up at the ceiling. He hesitates outside the door for a moment, preparing himself for what's to come. He rests his hand on the door handle, swallows, and quietly steps inside.
His gaze falls onto his husband lying in bed. He was barely awake but managed to focus his eyes on the brunette. Bucky steps over, offering him a weak smile.
"Hey, sweetheart," Bucky says softly, easing himself into the seat beside the hospital bed and taking Steve's hand carefully. The blonde smiles weakly up at him. He was pale and his body -- more specifically, his heart -- was giving up on him.
"Hey," Steve whispers and Bucky smiles. He smoothes Steve's blonde hair away from his face. "You okay?" Steve asks with a concerned look and Bucky chuckles humorlessly, quietly. Of course, his husband would be worried about him.
"I'm good, baby," he issues, looking down at his hands briefly. "You feeling any better?" He asks softly and Steve shifts a little, giving his shoulders a small shrug. Bucky accepts that as an answer in itself. "Has the doctor found you a heart?"
"Not yet," Steve replies with a small sigh. He wasn't giving up hope, not yet, though he was beginning to think about it. "I'll need someone with a compatible blood type, he says," he adds and Bucky nods quietly, thinking hard.
"You'll pull through this, I know it," Bucky declares, looking back up at him. Steve smiles slightly. "Too stubborn for anything else."
"Oh yeah. I'm just gonna last forever and ever, right?" Steve answers in a slightly sarcastic tone. Though Bucky nods in confirmation.
"Yes, you've made it this far," he comments with confidence and Steve's smile stretches, he leans back against his pillow. He gives his eyes a quick rub and Bucky watches quietly, his small smile fading slightly. He rubs Steve's hand briefly and kisses his forehead.
"You should probably get some rest," Bucky muses and Steve sighs heavily, looking up at him. "Don't worry, I'll stay here, okay?" He continues and Steve nods, looking relieved.
"Okay." Steve yawns, Bucky glances at his heart monitor. It was beating far too slowly and the brunette swallows. Within minutes the blonde drops off and Bucky sits there blankly. He was forming an idea and he knew he had to find out if it would work or not.
When the nurse comes in to check on Steve, Bucky quietly calls her over. "Can I get some blood taken to see my blood type?" He simply asks. She glances between him and Steve then goes about to fetch what she'd need to do so.

The brunette ends up having a compatible blood type. He fetches a doctor and explains his idea. It had to be very specific, mainly because of the serum running through Steve's body. Everything had to match up -- the serum they both had weren't far off from each other, and Bucky saw it as the safest option.
"Are you sure about this, son?" He asks with a sad look towards him. Bucky nods, glancing back into the room where his husband slept.
"Yeah. I'll do it. Can I just... I can tell him, can't I?" Bucky wavers and clears his throat. The doctor nods and Bucky heads back into the room.
"Buck?" Steve slurs as the brunette steps back into the room. Steve tries sitting up and Bucky hurries to his side.
"Right here," he assures and Steve looks at him then slowly relaxes. Bucky kisses him gently.
"So the doctors found you a heart. The operation is early tomorrow, you okay with that?" He says gently after pulling away and Steve nods quietly.
"You'll be there?" He tests and Bucky nods in response, giving his hand a brief squeeze. Steve smiles sleepily and Bucky smiles softly back, a hidden sadness in his eyes that Steve doesn't catch. "I love you so much," Steve mumbles. Bucky feels his heart break and he swallows the lump in his throat. He couldn't tell him.
"I love you too, Steve," Bucky responds quietly, rubbing his hand gently. As the blonde drifts off to sleep once more Bucky notices a pad of paper sitting on the bedside table and a pen and he gets another idea.

The surgeons decided on a heterotopic procedure, as Steve's heart still had some hope. The procedure was the next morning, as promised, and when Steve awoke he found himself surrounded by the Avengers.
"Welcome back to the land of the living," Tony grins at him, Bruce pokes his head around Tony's shoulder. Nat smiles at him, so do Clint, Sam, Wanda and Vision. Steve blinks up at them all then smiles at them.
"Hey," he smiles, looking between all the faces. They chat and laugh, Tony and Clint repeatedly make jokes until Wanda and Vision take them out into the hall. Soon it's only Sam and Nat sitting with him.
"So where's Bucky?" Steve asks and Nat and Sam exchange a glance. Steve watches them, instantly worried. "'Tasha?"
The redhead looks over at him and takes his hand within her two. "Look, man," Sam starts, shifting anxiously in his seat. "Steve, you know that Bucky really loved you, right?"
"Loved?" Steve repeats in an alarmed tone. Nat shoots Sam a glare before looking back at the blonde.
"He... gave you his heart, Steve," she says and the blonde freezes. Sam hands him a folded piece of paper and Steve opens it, heart pounding loudly in his ears.
Steve,
I'm sorry about this. I know you're gonna freak but hey, you need it way more than I do. I just want you to know I love you so much. And that my heart was always yours anyways. Hey, now I really will be with you till the end of the line. I love you so much.
Bucky
Steve drops the note on his lap, swallowing thickly, tears threatening to fall. "Why did he do that?" He chokes through a sob and Nat wraps her arms around him, rubbing his back. Sam sits quietly, watching them with a sad expression.

Steve did eventually move on, but of course he never forgot Bucky. After all, he was with him everywhere he went, no matter what.
