Bucky cautiously steps outside of his door, closing it behind him. This would be his first date ever. And it terrified him. Bucky had an anxious shudder because he'd been through some pretty tough stuff in his lifetime. Torture, fighting in war, killing, PTSD, Depression- it wasn't pleasant. So he had anxiety, of course.
He smoothes down his usually spiked brown hair and breathes out slowly, clenching his left hand into a fist. He'd lost his left arm in the war he'd fought in and had to get a replacement. All they had left to use was metal, so he had a metal arm.
Bucky trots down the stairs, shuddering now and then, and he walks out of the building. He would be going on a blind date, so he didn't know what the person would look like. All he knew was his name and age. Steve Rogers, twenty-five, same age as himself. Not knowing the rest didn't help his anxiety much.
///
Steve Rogers waits in the restaurant they'd chosen, checking his wristwatch and waiting patiently. He had fluffy blonde hair and blue eyes, he was six foot two and strong.
He waits for James Barnes to arrive, tapping a rhythm on his knee as he waits. He was a musician so he loved to make random rhythms and patterns. The door swings open to reveal a nervous looking brunette and Steve tilts his head a little.
"Uhm, James?" Steve tries and sees the brunette turn to face him. He visibly relaxes and walks over to Steve.
"You're Steve, right?" Bucky double checks shyly and Steve nods.
Bucky takes a seat across from Steve and shivers. The blonde doesn't make a comment and Bucky was grateful for that.
///
They get to meet each other properly and Steve noticed how James was super tense. Bucky, for now, preferred to be called by his first name, James. Bucky was his nickname.
At one point during the night Bucky was resting his arms on the table and Steve caught a gleam of silver out of the corner of his eye, and James saw that. He instantly pulls his arms closer to himself and shudders.
"James, you okay?" Steve asks gently, concerned. Bucky swallows and clenches his hand in his lap where Steve can't see.
"Fine." He replies quietly, glancing up at the blonde and feeling his heart stutter. Steve nods a little, still looking concerned. The brunette sighs a little then shakes his head.
"This is my first date ever and I have anxiety, I've been through a lot and I lost my arm, had to have it replaced with a metal one." He explains and Steve nods a little.
"Okay. This is my first date too." Steve confesses, rubbing the back of his neck.
"But you're a natural, Steve, this has been wonderful." Bucky insists and Steve smiles at him. Bucky smiles back.
///
As the night went on Bucky steadily got more confident, he already trusted Steve and felt comfortable around him. Steve seemed to loosen up more and he had a wacky sense of humor that made Bucky laugh.
"Tonight was fun." Steve comments and Bucky smiles, nodding.
"It was. Thank you, Steve." Bucky hums and Steve smiles softly. He pays and together they walk out. Bucky had walked to the place and Steve drove.
"You need a lift?" Steve asks and Bucky shrugs.
"If it's, uh, not too much trouble." He replies and Steve smiles, he shakes his head. He pulls the passenger door open for Bucky and the brunette blushes. Steve drives him home and Bucky thanks him then kisses his cheek, blushing still. Steve blushes as well and stutters out a goodbye. Bucky smiles and hugs him, Steve hugs back.
"'Bye, James." Steve hums, pulling back.
"Call me Bucky." The brunette hums before smiling and walking back into his place. Steve heads home, feeling pretty good.
///
They dated for two years before marrying and living a good life. They didn't adopt any children Bucky instead spent most of their time working at a programme for youths with anxiety and stress. Bucky was the founder and Steve was his second. The blonde was still a musician but didn't get very popular. They helped a lot of lives in their lifetime.
