Und es begab sich danach, dass sich der Mundschenk des Königs von Ägypten und der Bäcker versündigten an ihrem Herrn, dem König von Ägypten.
Die Szene, die jetzt hier in Kapitel 40 angefangen wird, zeigt eine Parallele zu der vorherigen Szene die im Hause Potiphars passiert war. Josef hat sich dafür entschieden, sich nicht an seinem Herrn Potiphar zu versündigen indem er auf die Verführung jener Frau verzichtet hat.
Der Mundschenk und der Bäcker des Pharaos also des Königs von Ägypten haben wohl etwas schlimmes getan und müssen jetzt wohl bestraft werden. Wie können sich die zwei, die für das Wohlergehen des Pharaos zuständig sind, sich am Pharao versündigen? Wahrscheinlich hatten sie vor den Pharao zu stürzen, zu vergiften oder zu töten. Oder sie wurden dessen verdächtigt.

Cupbearers held important positions within political organizations of the ancient Near East. The position was one of high trust: the king could easily be poisoned through wine, and the cupbearer could overhear private conversations during a meal, including those with other heads of state.
