Kiera POV
"What is happening?" I rushed to Karen's side as she hollered on the floor.
"That disgusting Alpha did it again." Becky spat out, her hand gently brushing through Karen's hair.
"Did what?" I asked as tears left my eyes. Karen was in so much pain, and I had no idea how to stop it.
"Her Alpha is taking another." Elizabeth's fingers brushed over her mark.
"Marcus!" I growled out.
Elizabeth's eyes enlarged at the realization. "Marcus? Is that Karen's mate? He was with Katherine."
I cursed under my breath. Katherine was mating with Marcus. She knew all those marked by Marcus would feel this pain, and I'm sure she didn't care in the slightest. I knew more than ever I needed to let her go.
"Reject him!" I demanded of Karen. Heat warming inside my skull.
"Your eyes!" Becky leaned away from me. "They are glowing.
"She's the one!" Whispers circled me, but I ignored them all.
"Karen!" I shouted her name, grabbing her face to look at me. "Reject him!" I ordered her.
"I... can't. It's hurts too much." She wailed out.
"It will hurt less if you reject him, and then you'll be free of him. Marcus or any other Alpha will never harm you again. I promise you this with my life." I vowed to her.
She shook her head slightly as she tried to sit up. Her arms squeezed her stomach, and tears rushed from her eyes. With a hard breath, she opened her mouth. "I... re...ject, Alpha... Marcus." It took minutes for her to get it all out, but it was done.
She sat on the floor in silence but still sobbing and trembling.
"Was the bond broken?" I asked, fearful of what was happening.
"Yes," Karen said wistfully. "I'm free." She gave me a half smile and then collapsed completely.
"She's dead!" People screamed in horror.
"She isn't dead," I whispered, my fingers brushing her hair from her face. "She needs rest and fluids. Is there a hospital close by?" I asked.
"We have a small office just a mile from here where our local doctor sees patients. The closest hospital is hours away." One woman spoke.
I shook my head that these people lived with so little. We had to rebuild every inch of our world. It wasn't right that so many lived with so little to survive.
"She just needs an IV. The office will suffice for now."
Maggie knelt on Karen's other side. "Let me take her. I'll watch over her while she heals. You are needed elsewhere tonight."
"I won't leave her alone. I need to be there when she wakes."
"You need to trust that I will offer every comfort she needs, Luna. You can't do everything on your own, and others need you." Maggie looked deep into my eyes, showing me her loyalty and determination.
"Let Maggie and the nurses tend to her," Elizabeth spoke next to me. "We are all set to hunt down this auction house, and we need you at our side out there." I knew what she said was true, but it felt wrong to abandon Karen after what happened.
Andy nodded to me that it was time to go. "You will return, and Karen will be delighted to hear how you saved a hundred more after saving her."
"Ok." I leaned over Karen's still body on the floor and kissed her forehead. "May the goddess protect you and make you stronger," I whispered to her.
