Chase POV
For days, I felt like I was teetering between this world and my death. Loki, ever resilient, bore the brunt of the pain while I retreated deep within our soul, seeking refuge from the agony that threatened to consume us. We had one mission left in this life, and that was to be reunited with our mate, even if it meant facing our end in her arms.
When I finally saw her radiant figure, I feared I was already too far gone to be saved. But then I awoke beside her. Kiera's slender form was curled against my side, her thick white-blond hair cascading over my chest and arm like a protective shroud. In that moment, I found solace and complete peace in her presence. There was no greater sight to behold than the woman I loved with every fiber of my being.
With careful precision, I removed the oxygen mask, IV wires, and heart monitor, freeing myself from the confines of the medical apparatus that surrounded me. These people thought technology would save me, but I knew Kiera's presence was all I needed to heal, to find the strength to defy the odds stacked against us, and to embrace the future I longed for us to be together.
I spent hours watching her, my fingertips tracing every curve of her body and twirling in her silky hair. I wanted to wake her, to shower her with kisses and whisper words of love into her ear, but the weakness still lingered within me. Loki had fallen silent, seeking respite after enduring such torment and pain. I couldn't help but feel a newfound respect for my wolf, knowing the lengths he had gone to save us, to bring us to her.
After a while, tiny whimpers escaped my beautiful mate's lips, and my heart clenched in concern as I watched her struggle in her sleep. Tears cascaded down her cheeks, stirring a deep, primal ache within me. A fierce protectiveness surged through my veins, igniting a blazing fire of determination.
"Cherie, please don't cry. Wake for me, love," I pleaded, my voice trembling with desperation. In the span of a few weeks, everything I once believed in had faded into insignificance. My sole purpose now was to be hers, to shield her from the pain and chaos of this world.
She woke, her magical purple eyes shimmering with vulnerability as she gazed at me. My resolve to never let her go remained steadfast, even as the weight of our unspoken conversation hung heavy in the air. But before we could delve deeper into our feelings, a violent coughing fit overtook me, forcing me back into a deep sleep. I felt her presence beside me, a silent reassurance of her unwavering support.
As we slept through another night, I was roused from my dreams by muffled whispers drifting through the room.
"We need to move on them and fast," a male voice spoke with urgency, sending a jolt of apprehension through me.
"Their Alpha is a war general who has pushed back even the Dark Wolves," a familiar woman's voice replied, but I couldn't quite place it. Then, the two voices dissolved into a heated argument, their words a murky haze that lingered.
The male's eagerness for a full-force attack clashed with the woman's preference for surprise tactics. I couldn't help but grin at the sound of their strategizing, stirring memories of past battles alongside my brothers.
"Enough!" The command, laced with scorn and reprimand, cut through the tension like a knife. Kiera's voice, with its unmistakable beauty, rang out with authority. "We may outnumber them, Andy, but Becky is right. They're cunning and prepared. If we charge headlong, they'll take advantage and cut us down. I won't sacrifice our warriors for the sake of a quick victory." Her voice was a loud whisper.
Her determination to safeguard every pack member turned my grin into a full-fledged smile. Slowly, I opened my eyes, greeted by the sight of Kiera and her two pack mates locked in whispered conversation, their voices hushed in an effort to avoid disturbing my rest.
