We spent the following days prior to new year by going sightseeing around the area we were in. It was the perfect activity for both of us because we absolutely loved nature - though, it was a little cold outside. Instead of wasting our time inside we decided to create new memories in the nature. And when we came back in the evening or afternoon, we lit up our chimney and cuddled. Sometimes we decided to watch the news or a movie on the really old TV we found here. That way we could find out if anything ghoul related was currently going on.

Most of the time we were not paying attention though as we were busy cuddling or sleeping, needlessly to say, after Christmas we were a lot closer and felt a lot more connected.

All my worries were blown away by a breeze that brought cloud nine.

Even if I hated everything that happened at Kanou's office and in that cell, I felt like it brought us a lot closer in the end - it helped to steady our bond a lot.

Everything was pretty much perfect until a news channel started airing reports of missing people. Most of them were from my university and therefore my age. Others were employees from nearby stores. One thing they all had in common was their location. Someone was clearly targeting the area around my university - which really ended up worrying me.

It seemed to be an urgent case, investigators said ghouls were probably involved.

After they added that Kamii had apparently been targeted for months and that the first case of a missing student was reported right after I started going back to it, I couldn't help but feel like I was part of the reason for it.

On the other hand, it really didn't bother me as there was no way I'd go back to that place anyway and it at least meant that the - probably Aogiri - ghouls were still expecting me to be there and not here, at Renji's grandparents' house.

Which was very relieving considering I just thought I had seen one of them before Christmas, it made me believe that I was simply imagining things.

So we didn't bother about it too much.

At least up until this point..

Renji's arms were wrapped around my body and my head was laying on his chest.

His heartbeat always managed to make me calm down as I knew he was with me and that this was indeed not just a good dream, that it was actually happening.

A noise coming from the living room below us made me wake up slowly, it sounded as if a vase shattered on the ground.

Blaming it on a window that we forgot to close, I tried to go back to sleep without any worrying.

Instead of focusing on a possible snow storm that was causing our living room to turn into a snow field, I focussed on the rustling coming from our chimney.

And sooner or later, I fell back asleep.

But once again my sleep was not supposed to last long, another heavy object - perhaps our Christmas tree - fell over.

This time, it caused me to wake up with a groan because it actually scared me, making me flinch, which ended up making Renji shuffle around so he let go of me.

Wanting to sleep through the night instead of waking up every few minutes due to something breaking or falling to the ground, I slowly crawled out of the bed and stood on the quite cold wooden floor with my bare feet.

Urgh, I better hurry - this is way too cold.

To endure the inevitable cold that was awaiting me downstairs, I took a cardigan and threw it over my shoulders.

Guess it was not a good idea to only wear Renji's shirt tonight.. Maybe I should've stuck with my pyjama.. It would've been a lot warmer at least.

Sneaking my way past the bed and out of the room, I heard more random noises from downstairs.

Seems to be really windy..

As I took a short glance out of a window it didn't seem to be windy at all.

It's not even snowing and the leaves are not moving.. Weird..

Still, I was too tired to suspect anything - after all, it was around 3am and I had just fallen asleep at around 1am with Renji, after we spent the entire evening playing an old card game that we found.

Trying to be as quiet as ever to not wake Renji, I stepped down the stairs.

I can't wait to go back to bed..

But I stopped in my tracks as I heard footsteps and murmuring.

What was that..? Did I imagine that..?

I started holding my breath to perhaps hear the sounds again and clearer.

Stomping, murmuring - and another object thrown to the ground.

It took me a few seconds to realize that someone seemed to have broken into our house and was currently vandalizing furniture and other object but once it finally sunk it, I ran back upstairs.

My footsteps, my stomping up the stairs, must've made the intruder notice that I was awake as I immediately heard footsteps following me.

Rushing back into our bedroom and smacking the door close, Renji groaned loudly, visibly disapproving of my behaviour.

"Renji!.. Renji, wake up!" I shouted as I tried to find objects to barricade the door.

Again, he just groaned and shuffled around, turning his back to me.

"Renji! I'm serious!" I added.

Still, no reaction.

"For fucks sake" I cursed as I crawled onto the bed and shook him, "Renji! Wake the fuck up! Someone's here!"

Sighing, he slowly opened his eyes and glanced up at me: "Hmm?"

"Intruder! Someone's here!"

Right after I finished my sentence someone smashed against the bedroom door, punching his fist against it, wanting it to open.

Renji sat up as soon as he heard that, his eyes widen and a deep frown gracing his forehead.

"They're here" he mumbled as he got up.
