Too Late To Apologize

Beep. Beep. Beep. Your body was numb to the core, only moving when enough force was used. The only thing you felt was an immense pain. Even opening your eyes was sometimes an undoable task. Speaking was usually utterly impossible. More than a few occasional words didn't leave your mouth, a full sentence hadn't been heard from you in a long time. Thinking became more difficult as well, yet it was the only thing you had in this state - your own brain, your own thoughts. Sometimes nothing worked out. No questions could be answered, no instructions could be followed. The only thing that always stayed was the beeping of the machines surrounding you and the murmuring of doctors or nurses nearby... and the warm hand that sadly held yours firmly.

You didn't feel alive but you were.. Somehow.

Before you were taken to the hospital, Touka managed to reach Chigyou who sent an ambulance, then jumped in his car and drove over as well. While the ambulance was on it's way, Touka performed CPR on you, desperately trying to make your heart beat. Unfortunately, she further damaged your head and spine in the process due to her moving your body lightly. All the while Renji was in complete shock of his own actions. It was the first time he saw how badly he injured you, the first time he recognized all the bruises as his own acts and noticed that he was being incredibly cruel. He came back to his senses while you were gone, understood his mistakes and began hating himself for it only seconds after he saw your pale, lifeless body.

Until the ambulance arrived, your fate was uncertain.

They had to stabilize your neck before they could perform any further action on you. It took another few minutes of them using the defibrillator before your heart finally started beating again. However, a beating heart doesn't mean that the person just jumps up and lives. No. In your case, you were alive but unconscious. In a coma. Again.

It didn't take long for them to understand that you were about to leave and that Renji inflicted these wounds and bruises to you. Not even Renji's assault stayed a secret. While they very carefully dressed you in a hospital robe, they found evidence. But since you both were considered ghouls, no court would care and he couldn't be locked away. Besides that they found out that on top of severe brain damage and probably a tremendous traumatic brain injury, your jaw was broken, some other facial bones were fractured and your spine seemed to be severely damaged as well. Other than that they only found bruises. Once transported to the CCG's hospital, they performed various emergency surgeries on you, then scanned your upper body. Chigyou spotted damage done to your kakuhou, which resulted in you not healing. Why and how that was possible could only be concluded with the fact that you were not a natural born ghoul and that they were - compared to an actual ghoul ones - probably rather weak. Later that day he finally checked on your baby. Only Renji was in the room, Touka hid from the ambulance as soon as she heard the siren approaching the house. She feared they'd be related to the CCG and that she'd be caught. Therefore, she was staying at the house and only Renji was dragged along. He was put on incredibly high suppressants. Everyone assumed he could break into a fit of rage again and Chigyou decided to not risk that. For once, Renji agreed to it and let some nurse drug him.

Though everyone believed that he must despise you, he stayed by your side through every single day. He rarely left but when he did, he always returned with some fresh flowers that you couldn't cherish. He insisted that he loved you and even let the CCG monitor him every single hour of every single day so that he could stay with you.
