As I was running from them, I heard their footsteps further behind me. They were coming after me. My heart was certainly not ready for a lot of running and my body was already beyond exhausted but I wasn't going to give up this easily. I had to succeed and finish this task; everyone was counting on me. So even though my breathing was getting difficult and I was almost out of breath again, I kept going. I pushed my limits.
If I don't do something, they might lose their interest in me. They need a reason to follow me. If I'm just a boring ghoul they'll eventually let me go, I need to provide them a reason to hunt me.
If they'd stop chasing me, I would fail. I needed as many investigators as possible following me. At best, they'd contact the headquarters and send more investigators to me. But in order for that to happen, I had to create chaos, potentially even wound some of them to increase the chances of new investigators being sent in my direction. I had to pretend to be an aggressive, hungry ghoul willing to kill anyone in their sight.
Ahead of me was the first crossroad. I decided to take a sharp turn to the left and enter the main road. That way, I was in no way hiding and easier to see from afar. Any other patrolling investigators in the distance could eventually spot me.
Glancing over my shoulder, I realized they were still hurrying after me - but they began to look tired, so I knew I had to slow down. However, before I would do that, I decided to add some spice to the situation and partially blocked the road behind me by collapsing a wall of a building. It slowed them down quite a bit, buying me some time and also giving me a chance to take a deep breath. If they'd try to shoot me again, I could easily dodge their bullets. But for now, I just tried to get my shoulder back in place. It still hurt, the adrenaline was covering most of the pain, though.
I have to ensure I'll give them a chance of catching me. They have to believe they can do it. Maybe I should even let them get some hits in.. Just in case.
While they were cursing behind me, I grinned to myself. More Q-Bullets were flying at me but none of them were even close to hitting me. They certainly weren't good at aiming. For now, I wasn't worried. Their short-distance weapons were a lot more dangerous. The only things I had to be cautious of were RC suppressants. If they'd throw a bomb containing them I'd be screwed.
Maybe I'll have to run into their bullets in order to make them feel better.. I can't let them get frustrated so easily.
With my increased senses, it was easy to hear the bullets coming and even sort of calculate at what part they were aimed at. So it was easily possible to run into them just as much as I should be able to effortlessly dodge them. And if I wouldn't be able to dodge them due to limited space, I still had my kagune. I just had to stay focused for it to work.
When I finally re-located my shoulder, I bit my lip hard but wasted no time in deciding where to go next. Staying on the main road seemed most logical to me but considering how it was essentially just a straight line, I decided that wouldn't be too efficient. Running zig-zag, constantly switching between the busiest roads seemed like a good idea. All the while I still had to ensure I was making my way out of town. Thanks to the overview I had earlier, I knew where I had to go.
I'm going to fulfill this mission. I won't fail.
