The following weeks were beyond stressful. After three more days of staying at the hospital, you moved in with Koutarou - much to Renji's dismay. Of course, your son, Ryuu, was right there with you. From the first day on, he was a bundle of joy and happiness. He smiled, laughed and - at first - barely ever cried. Renji was with you day and night until you left the hospital. His stay was something you only approved of because your son kept smiling at him. They were bonding. But if he would've done one single thing to upset you, you would've kicked him right out. Thankfully, Renji stayed calm the entire time - even without alcohol or cigarettes. He even helped you pack your bags and you managed to have calm conversations about stuff you used to speak about before his actions.

And then you left and took your son.

To say it was easy would be a lie. Ryuu woke up in the middle of the night: crying, screaming, sobbing. The whole program. You were the only one that could calm him down. Most days you spent sleeping in a sitting position right next to his bed - there was simply no time to leave. Without you near, he felt uncomfortable. There was no doubt that you loved your son.. But he was quite hard to handle. Seeing his smile made up for all the trouble, though.

He seemed to miss his father, so you decided to allow him to visit. Twice a week, not more until he'd get better and only if he'd show proof that he's trying. That was a promise you made to yourself and to your son. The risk was, in your eyes, still too high that Renji would fall back into his abusive patterns. To ensure he was behaving well and definitely not hurting your son, you stayed with them through the visits. No alone time. That was another rule Renji had to endure.

But he never complained. He was grateful for the days he got to see his son. So grateful that he even started bringing you flowers with every visit - your favorite flowers. Was that to show his appreciation? No. It was because he still loved you and still wanted you back. It didn't take long before you got the hint but you always maintained a healthy distance between you two. Forgiving him was one thing.. But also forgetting? Both were impossible to you. It was too soon.

Whenever Renji wasn't with you, he was with Touka. To prove himself to you, he tried his best to get his life back together. He went to doctors, smoked and drunk less. And finally, he bought a new café: Re. It was his little project that he decided to keep a secret until the time was right. He wanted you to be proud of the final product.

During the days without Renji, Koutarou began taking his place. He always wanted to help in any way possible. Were you feeling exhausted all day? He took over. Your wound burned? No worries, he got you some lotion while taking care of your son. Simply tired? Just let him handle it.

Koutarou became Ryuu's unofficial part-time father. It was undeniable that you both grew closer now that you lived together. It was almost like you three were the real family - excluding Renji.

Your bond grew immensely as Koutarou broke his half-ghoul being to you only days after you moved in. He didn't make a fuss about it, didn't try to avoid the issue. Koutarou simply cooked dinner for the both of you; fresh human flesh with some blood wine sauce. And then it all came out. He explained how he was put through tests by Kanou before he was captured and locked away. It was his secret, something only Chigyou and, now, you knew. Chigyou was the one who dragged him through difficult situations during work - especially the gates were causing trouble. So much trouble that he had to quit his investigator job. People were getting suspicious - mainly his partner but she spread rumors like wildfire. Koutarou was still somewhat associated with the CCG but it was mainly Chigyou who ordered him around.
