"Bad news?" Renji repeated, sounding distraught.
"Unfortunately, yes" Chigyou sighed, his eyes leaving us to look at the table between us.
Ryuu wobbled around on my lap and in my arms - of course, I didn't let him sit without support. He reached out for a pencil to play with. Chigyou watched every move he made and then sighed.
My heart began to race at the way his expression changed into a rather sad, empathy filled one.
"Well, as you might've noticed, Ryuu is suffering from a form of strabismus. I assume at least one of you has been having issues with his eye before?" Chigyou wondered.
Renji and I both stayed silent, thinking. It took me a few seconds before I recalled how I was supposed to go blind on one of my eyes.. But then I became a half-ghoul and it healed.
"Well, I had a growing cataract caused-" I started explaining but he cut me off.
"But it was nothing related to your genetics, nothing you inherited from your parents, right?" he asked right away, fidgeting with his thumbs.
"N-no.." I stuttered, unsure of where he was trying to go.
"I see. Otherwise, we would've found the source of your son's condition.."
Judging by his expression he was preparing to tell us, searching for words to say. Renji helped Ryuu grab the pencil and ruffled through his hair, which - to my surprise - made him giggle. Perhaps it was because he held the pencil, though.
"I'll make it quick for the sake of your son" he murmured, taking a deep breath before he sighing, "We have to take action urgently."
I sucked my bottom lip into my mouth, not sure what to expect. Renji frowned deeply as he glanced at Chigyou. With each passing moment of silence, my heart beat increased.
"Your son is probably suffering from retinoblastoma" Chigyou spoke firmly, meeting my eyes first, then switching over to Renji's.
"What does that mean?" Renji asked, speaking my thought out loud.
"It's a tumor at the very back of his eye. It's what's causing his esotropia and vision loss. It's a type of cancer that mainly children suffer from. Your son happens to be one of them" Chigyou replied, his voice softer than before.
The second he mentioned the word cancer, my world came to a stop. My eyes shifted towards my son peacefully playing with the pencil and Chigyou whose eyes were piercing through mine. I was absolutely shocked.
"At first, I thought it wouldn't be anything serious but after analyzing those tests I performed on him, to find out how good his vision must be, things started making sense. I assume he's been carrying it around since he was born about 7 months ago. His type of cancer must've been caused by your mixed genetics" he continued to explain, sending shivers down my spine
