The following weeks were an utmost pain for all of you. Ryuu's eye was removed within 48h after the diagnosis. His therapy started a week later. Your little man suffered through tremendous pain due to not being able to take painkillers. All you could do was stay up with him, comfort him, hold him close. But he still cried all night long - it was the screaming that tired him and eventually helped him fall asleep. The amount of sleep he got was a joke. Even at night, the pain plagued him. He spent every waking minute in tears, sobbing and in either his mother's or his father's arms - even Koutarou's sometimes.
For the sake of your terminally ill son, you let Renji spend time with him - and you. Most nights he even stayed over and slept on the couch in his room. You slept in your son's room as well. That way you both could pamper him through this hard time.
Chigyou decided he'd receive radiation- and chemotherapy at the same time. The radiation was used for his body, not his head, while the chemotherapy was supposed to kill them from within. Both was potentially dangerous for such a young child, a baby. The dosage had to be very precise, otherwise, it could easily kill him and that was something no one wanted.
Renji and you both accompanied him to every single session to be able to hold him right after, be there for him. As much as you hated being with Renji, you were glad you were not alone in this. You were grateful for him caring about Ryuu's health so much, he decided to give up both his drugs entirely - overnight.
Right after Ryuu's diagnose, Renji had another low had two very horrible days of smoking and drinking to the point of unconsciousness.. But then Ryuu's eye was removed and the first time he heard him cry, he woke up. For good. Within another day he got rid of it all. No more smoking. No more drinking. And he pulled through - entirely. No more occasional cigarettes or occasional sips of wine. No. He threw it all away or gave it back to Itori.
Since then, Renji stood right by his son's side. Clean and healthier.
The only times he left was when he had to go to his therapy - even after you rejected him, he still wanted to better himself for you. And he got better and better at controlling his demon. Not once did he yell at you or even attempt to hit you. Sometimes "Ren" wanted to show up, wanted to hurt her but before he took actual control, Renji forced him back. It was all for his son.. And for you.
For the family he didn't quite have.
It was thanks to his good behavior that he was given the option of staying overnight - otherwise Koutarou, nor you, would've let him stay. Koutarou generally always had an eye out for him. One wrong move and he would've kicked him out of his place without an excuse.
The bond you had with Koutarou became stronger and stronger, in a way, he was like an older brother to you. At least if you ignore the intimacy you shared before. Every now and then it still seemed like Koutarou was harboring feelings for you - and he was. Although he agreed to breaking up, going back to being friends, he still loved you. But he knew you weren't ready to move on nor did he want to scare you off or put pressure on you. He decided that he was fine with being friends with you - he simply wanted to protect you from any kind of evil and Renji. To him, you had gone through enough. By far. He just wanted to see your smile, make you happy or at least see you be happy.
And judging by what he saw, Renji somehow made you happy.
