While we waited for everyone to align, my euphoria slowly washed off. With every passing minute, I grew more nervous. I knew we were about to begin. I knew what we had to do. But I just couldn't imagine how big this could be. I couldn't imagine the scale of this. How many families would be affected? How many innocent humans were in danger? How many innocent ghouls were in danger? And even children? And the more I wanted to imagine, the more it scared me. The extent was probably immeasurable.

Koutarou and I kept exchanging reassuring smiles but it was becoming ever so evident that we were both having our doubts and worries about this whole situation. That I spoke to Renji and it somehow went well surprised me, still lifted my mood but at the same time, I began to fear that I'd never be able to tell him everything else that happened.

"We're ready to go!" Kaneki shouted through the hall, jogging towards us and rapidly pulling me out of my thoughts, "I'll give you the key for the exit you'll take. Lock the gate before you ultimately head out and keep it somewhere safe."

As he rummaged through his pockets, I took a deep breath. Before I even finished breathing he stretched his hand out and revealed the key on the palm of his hand. After a quick glimpse over at my best friend, our gaze meeting right away, I nodded and slowly reached out to take it. Koutarou knew we'd get a key and I agreed to be the one taking it. It was easiest for me to hide: I could just stick it inside my bra. And that's exactly what I did. My breasts were no longer tender and sensitive, so I could easily wear my old ones again. It was the most secure place we could come up with in advance.

"Distract the CCG at all costs - but not your own life. We can't lose either of you and I believe you're both strong enough to withstand the first few investigators until our groups will jump in. Our goal is not to kill unless necessary, we're aiming to at most wound but mainly defend ourselves, and ultimately reaching the headquarters. Your goal is to grab attention. You don't have to fight until you start heading towards the headquarters. We all meet up there," he recalled our task for us, his face hinting concern for us, "You'll take the tunnel ahead of us on the left and follow it until a connected tunnel comes in sight and you see the gate. Proceed through that and then climb up separate ladders. There are two, ones a little deeper inside than the other, so one of you is starting sooner but that way we will cause more outrage and cover a wider region, which is mandatory for the groups to exit safely and then start their mission of fighting through to the headquarters."

Once he was done repeating our task to us, Koutarou and I nodded in sync. We were both at a loss for words with our mouths run dry. With every word, this whole situation became more real. Everything about this we suppressed before was coming back up. It made my heart race and my breathing increase drastically.

It's really happening..

"You have approximately half an hour from now before we sent off the first three groups" Kaneki went on, reaching into his back pocket and taking out a watch, "This one's for you (Y/N). Koutarou already got one.. But I haven't seen you since the last meetup, so here's yours."

Taking it from him, I quickly wrapped it around my left wrist before staring at it a couple of minutes to ensure it was still working: "Thank you."

"Alright. So are you good to go? Want another sip of water?" he wondered, his eyes constantly moving between Koutarou and me.
