(Miles Edgeworth x Reader)
Your Pov:
I walked around the office, finishing up some last minute Christmas decorations. Some detectives and officers walked around sporting reindeer antlers, elf, or Santa hats. Tinsel hung from every desk and shelf. Stockings with their owner's first initial and last name were hung on the edge of their respective desks.
Christmas music played from a Bluetooth speaker in the corner. For the finishing touch, we even put up a Christmas tree with ornaments designed by each detective and officer. One ornament was left in the box for Miles and I. I sighed and turned around, only to bump into Gumshoe. He was wearing an elf hat.
"Hey pal, I think you should go talk to Mr. Edgeworth. He's being a bit of a grinch." I nodded, "I will. Thanks Gumshoe." I headed up to Miles' office and knocked on the door. That's when I noticed that every door besides his was decorated for Christmas. Then, his voice came from inside, "Come in."
I opened the door and stepped inside, shutting the door behind me, "Good morning, Miles." He looked up from his desk, "Oh, good morning (Y/n). What brings you here? You never really have a reason to see me until lunch." I sat in the chair in front of his desk and took a deep breath.
"Everyone is worried about your lack of Christmas cheer. Your office is plain while everyone else's is decorated." He scoffed, "I have no reason to celebrate this ludicrous holiday. It does nothing but stir up unwanted memories." I frowned as I realized what he was talking about.
His father's murder.
And.
His involvement a related case.
I swallowed, "Miles, I know that you miss your father and I know that you feel like you could've done something different, but what happened that day, all those years ago and now, was not your fault." He turned his spinning chair towards the window, facing away from me. I got up and walked over to him, "I won't let you shut me out like everyone else. I love you. I know that this is the time for grieving for you, but you're not moving on."
I continued, "And now, it isn't just grieving. It's living in the past." He jerked around, "Shut your damn mouth." My eyes widened as I stood there in shock. He continued, "You don't know anything. And at this rate, you never will." I snapped. "Then make me understand. Explain it to me. I don't know because you barely talk to me about it." He stood from his chair and walked over to the window.
"Tell me this: why should I celebrate a holiday that makes me relive the horrible past? When it always end with toasting to the thought of 'wish you were here but you're not'? When the drinking brings back the memories and the memories bring back them?" I rested a hand on his shoulder, "Because it doesn't have to be that way. You don't have to think of the bad times. Think about now. Think about all the people who care about you: Phoenix, Franziska, Larry, Gumshoe, me..." I smiled slightly.
"Think about starting the year fresh. New cases, new people. Think about the joy of giving back to others." He turned to me, "I-I think I could give this holiday thing a try, but don't go overboard, alright?" I nodded, "I won't." I went and grabbed some decorations before hurrying back to the office. I stepped inside and paused when I heard faint Christmas music playing from Miles' laptop. I smiled.
"That's a good start. Now, lets get started." We started with some tinsel. I laid it across his windowsill and straightened it. Then, we continued. After a while, we finished up. The office looked amazing. Lights hung over the window as tinsel lined the sofa. I looked over at Miles to see him writing on something. Then, he placed it on the desk. It was the ornament saved for us to design. One half was colored magenta-red while the other half was colored (f/c). Over the two colors was something written.
It read 'Christmas was cold and grey. Another holiday alone to celebrate, but then one day, everything changed. You're all I need...'
Under that was M + (first initial).
He looked at me, "Do you like it?" I nodded, "I love it. Let's go hang it on the tree." As we walked towards the door, I paused, "Wait a second. Oh, there it is!" I pulled a Santa hat out of my bag and placed it on his head. He sighed, but let it stay. We headed down to the detective's offices where the tree was. When everyone spotted Miles, they paused and gaped. Even Gumshoe, who was talking with Maggey (who wore reindeer antlers), paused in shock. I led Miles to the tree, "Everyone has an ornament."
He gently took the ornament from my hands and placed it in an empty space right in the middle of the tree, "And now we have one as well."
I smiled, Merry Christmas, Miles."
He looked down at me, "Merry Christmas, (Y/n)."
