Shot (Phoenix x Sister! reader)
Your Pov:
I walked up onto the stage, ready to perform my last song. It was one that I had written and worked on for a long time. It was for my brother. In the crowd I spotted Miles and Gumshoe. I grabbed my guitar and started strumming the strings.
"He was on his way home from the Courthouse. Been two weeks gone and he thought he'd stop at Web's and have him a drink 'fore he went home to her. Larry Butz said hello. He said, "Hi, what's new?" And Butz said, "Sit down I got some bad news that's going to hurt..."
I could see Miles and Gumshoe getting tense in the crowd.
"Said, "I'm your best friend and you know that's right. But your young bride ain't home tonight. Since you've been gone, she's been seeing that Amos boy, Doug." Now he got mad and he saw red. Larry said, "Boy, don't you lose your head. Because to tell you the truth, I've been with her myself."
(For the sake of the story, let's just say that Iris was with Doug instead of Dahlia for the eight months they dated before Dahlia met Phoenix.)
I could vividly remember my brother's 'wife'. Her black hair and crown braids. Her little facade.
"That's the night that the lights went out in California! That's the night that they hung an innocent man! Well, don't trust your soul to no backwoods no good lawyer! Cause the judge in the town's got bloodstains on his hands!"
I spotted the judge himself in the very back. He looked scared.
How pathetic.
"Larry got scared and left the bar. Walkin' on home cause he didn't live far. You see Larry didn't have many friends and he just lost him one. Brother thought his wife must've left town. So he went home and finally found the only thing daddy had left him and that was a gun. He went off to Larry's house. Slipping through the backwoods quiet as a mouse. Came upon some tracks too small for Larry to make..."
I could see the gears moving in Miles' head. But, even he couldn't do anything now. No one could.
"He looked through the screen at the back porch door. And he saw Larry lyin' on the floor. In a puddle of blood and he started to shake. California patrol was making their rounds. So he fired a shot just to flag em down. A big bellied sheriff grabbed his gun and said
"Why'd you do it?" The judge said guilty on a make-believe trial. Slapped the sheriff on the back with a smile. Said supper's waitin' at home and I gotta get to it..."
They took Phoenix to jail that night. I woke up the next day to the neighbors banging on my door, asking if I knew what was going on. Of course I did.
"That's the night the lights went out in California! That's the night that they hung an innocent man! Well, don't trust your soul to no backwoods no good lawyer! Cause the judge in the town's got bloodstains on his hands!"
I started walking the stage, putting the judge and Miles on edge. Gumshoe had long since disappeared. He knew better than to stick around.
"Well, they hung my brother before I could say the tracks he saw while on his way to Larry's house and back that night were mine. And his cheatin' wife had never left town! That's one body that'll never be found! You see little sister don't miss when she aims her gun..."
I smirked. Her body's probably still rotting at the bottom of the Eagle River. After all, most bodies that fall in are never recovered. Phoenix was my brother and I wouldn't let that girl keep hurting him. So, I got rid of her.
"That's the night the lights went out in California! That's the night that they hung an innocent man! Well, don't trust your soul to no backwoods no good lawyer! Cause the judge in the town's got bloodstains on his hands!"
I smiled as the judge rushed out of the club. He would get his karma soon enough. Miles stared at me with an unreadable expression. He wasn't innocent either.
He was the prosecutor in the case.
"That's the night the lights went out in California! That's the night that they hung an innocent man! Well, don't trust your soul to no backwoods no good lawyer! Cause the judge in the town's got bloodstains on his hands!"
I finished the song. The crowd clapped and cheered. I bowed and left the stage, heading for my private break room. I headed inside only to be greeted by Miles. I shut the door, "And to what do I owe the pleasure, Miles Edgeworth?" He stood up, "Why? Why did you let him die?" I frowned, "I didn't let him die! I tried to tell the judge, but he was also seeing that no good bitch so I couldn't do much. And what about you?"
He looked away, "I had no choice, but now, I have the real killer. Gumshoe." He gestured to the door. Gumshoe stepped in with his handcuffs. Miles continued, "Arrest her." I laughed, "It's too late. The statute of limitations for his case is up. It's already in the vault. You aren't the only one with contacts in the office, Miles." He growled, "I hope karma will come collect your debt." With that, the two of them were gone. I sat down, thinking.
I'm glad I killed her. She deserved it. As for the rest of them? I hope they all rot. Phoenix was innocent, but he couldn't be saved.
After all, if the court becomes corrupt, who's to say that they are?
Not the prosecutors.
Not the witnesses.
Not even the judge.
