Fallen From Grace (Miles Edgeworth x Reader)

A/N: Takes place literally an hour before turnabout goodbyes murder happens.

Your Pov:

My eyes slowly fluttered open and I turned over, only to find Miles' side of the bed empty and cold. I looked at the clock. It was 11:30 PM. I got out of bed and shrugged on a robe over my nightgown. I quietly padded down the hallway to Miles' office. As I stood outside the door, I could hear his pen scratching across the paper.

I sighed and opened the door. It creaked slightly, but he didn't bother to look up. He was writing feverishly and a letter sat open next to him. I walked over, putting a hand on his shoulder, "Miles come back to sleep." He shrugged my hand off, "I have an early meeting out of town."

I looked out the window. It was dark, as expected for this time of night. I walked behind him, gently wrapping my arms around his neck, "It’s still dark outside..." He paused his writings, then picked up again, "I know. I just need to write something down." I frowned, bringing my hands down to hold his shoulders.

"Why do you write like you’re running out of time?"

He lifted his hand, brushing it against my cheek before resuming his writing, "Shh..."

I dropped my head onto his shoulder, "Come back to bed. That would be enough." My eyes were starting to get heavy again. His hand gently raked through my hair, "I’ll be back before you know I’m gone." I placed a soft kiss on his neck, "Come back to sleep..." He tensed, then shook his head, "This meeting’s at midnight."

I stood straight and stepped away, "Well, I’m going back to sleep." I walked around the desk towards the door. Just then, he gently gripped my wrist, "Hey. Best of wives and best of women." Our rings glinted in the moonlight as he held my hand.

I smiled before heading back to bed. Within moments, I fell back asleep.

Time Skip...Next Morning

I woke up to a still empty bed. I sighed and turned on the TV. The first thing to come on was the news. The reporter was talking about Gourd Lake, "We interrupt this program to bring you a special news bulletin! Strange occurrences continue at Gourd Lake...But this time, it's murder!" I turned up the volume and kept watching, "The body of a man was found in the lake early this morning. A suspect was apprehended."

The reporter continued, "Sources inside the police department revealed...that the suspect's name is Miles Edgeworth, age 24. Edgeworth was an up-and-coming prosecution attorney, known for his skill and connections. He was guaranteed a long and rewarding career...has he thrown it all away?"

I brought a hand to my mouth as the shock coursed through my veins. I got up and walked to Miles' office. On his desk, was a letter addressed to me. I picked it up and took it out of the envelope. I started reading.

My Dearest Love, (Y/n),

I apologize for only leaving you this letter, but the circumstances have forced me to do so. I cannot even begin to tell you how much I love you. In all of my years of living, you have made life worth it.

It pains me terribly to know that I will leave you to suffer alone, but I have to go. There are things I need to settle and things I have to finish. Just know, that none of this was your fault. You could not have prevented nor predicted this. If anyone is to blame, it's me.

I was a coward. Too afraid to confront one man, but strong enough to dash my father's legacy for a man who barely knew me. I've fled from the past because I was too afraid to face it, but now, I have no choice. It's the price I must pay for being ignorant of the truth.

You, though...

I want you to be happy. Don't chase after me, not after the things I have done. Just remember me and then remember all the things you wanted to accomplish. Go and accomplish those things.

You deserve it.

Best of wives and best of women.

Eternally yours,
                                Miles Edgeworth

I held the letter tightly as I collapsed to the floor. I read the letter over and over, but it only made everything harder.

And I couldn't do anything about it...
