Adrift (Phoenix x Reader)
A/N: This is normal attorney Phoenix.
Your Pov:
I sat in the empty house, contemplating all of the choices I've made up until now. Most of them were the wrong choices, but how could I know that when it felt so right? I loved him and I thought that he loved me in return.
I was wrong.
He was wrong.
It was all...wrong.
I think...I think when it's all over it just comes back in flashes, you know?
*Flashback (7 months ago)*
I sat on the couch in the office, laughing at Phoenix as he told me about his crazy cases. He made really overdramatic hand gestures which made me laugh more. Once he heard me laughing, he paused. He stared at me, a happy grin on his face, "Your laugh is adorable." I blushed. This time, it was his turn to laugh.
I grabbed his hand and pulled him onto the couch. We stared at each other before bursting into laughter. After we calmed down, he held me close and kissed my forehead. I snuggled into him, smiling.
We laid there for hours, cuddling. And eventually, we fell asleep.
*Flashback End*
If I would've been able to see the person he became, I would've never put myself through the pain and stuck around. Everytime I think about him or the memories, my heart feels like it's going to explode.
Not out of happiness, but out of the sadness and bitterness of it all.
It's like a kaleidoscope of memories, it just all comes back. But he never does.
Everyone changes with time and whether it's good or bad, depends on the person. Phoenix changed for the worst. After a few years of a perfect winning streak, he became cocky, and overconfident in a way. He thought he was invincible. He thought that no one could best him in the courtroom.
I think part of me knew the second I saw him that this would happen. It's not really anything he said or anything he did, it was the feeling that came along with it.
Finding someone like him seemed to be impossible. He gave me this indescribable feeling when I was with him. This electric feeling shooting through my veins and into my heart from just the slightest of touches.
And the crazy thing is, I don't know if I'm ever going to feel that way again, but I don't know if I should.
I don't know if next time I should take it as an omen or a sign or if I should just run and never look back. With him, it was like I was glued to the floor and unable to escape. But at the same time, he made my head spin in ways I never imagined possible.
I knew his world moved too fast and burned too bright. But I just thought, how can the devil be pulling you toward someone who looks so much like an angel when he smiles at you?
I never understood why he enjoyed playing the devil's advocate. He seemed to enjoy flipping the script on everyone, including me. He knew how to play the game by his rules and he didn't intend on losing.
Maybe he knew that when he saw me.
I guess I just lost my balance.
Everyday spent with him was like a dream. It was heaven. I felt like I was walking on air, until he left me on the concrete.
I still remember the day he left me. I remember what the weather was like, what time it was, and how much it killed me inside. It was 11:00 am and cloudy. The office was quiet.
And then he decided I wasn't good enough to keep around. He tossed me out like I was nothing. And at that point, I felt like I was nothing.
And that's when I realized...
I think that the worst part of it all wasn't losing him.
It was losing me.
