Your Pov:

I stood in my room, watching as servants flitted around. Some were adding the finishing touches to my outfit while others were checking on my hair and makeup. As I was a few years older than Rayfa, I was to ascend to the throne in her place since she still had much to learn.

The servants finished and bowed to me before quickly leaving the room. I turned towards the mirror, looking at my reflection.

Pinned in my hair was one of mother's hair pins.

As I turned away from the mirror, the door opened and Nahyuta stepped into the room. He spoke. "You look beautiful. Mother is waiting for us in the royal chambers." I sighed. "Nahyuta...Is this what father would've wanted?" Nahyuta hummed. "He would've wanted you to marry a strong, loving man who could protect you. And you're doing just that in a few days time."

We left the room in silence. The walk to the royal chambers was awkward. As we entered, I spotted Rayfa standing with my mother and Athena and Apollo standing next to her. Athena grinned and pulled me into a tight hug. "(Y/n)! I've missed you!"

I hugged her back as I felt myself blushing. After the hug ended, I turned to face my mother.

"I am ready, mother."

My mother smiled. "I'm glad. Your suitor should arrive soon. He is a strong, kind man, like that of your father." I swallowed the lump in my throat. "I see..." Nahyuta glanced at me, but I ignored him. Mother gestured towards the courtyard.

"Why don't you go on a walk in the courtyard with Rayfa until your suitor arrives?"

I forced a smile. "Yes, mother."

As I left the room, I caught Athena's gaze again. Something about herself made my heart pound in my chest. I quickly looked away when she smiled at me.

As Rayfa and I walked around the courtyard, she turned to me. "(Y/n)...Are you ready to be married? To a stranger no less?" I turned to her. "I'll be alright, Rayfa. It's an honor to help my kingdom in this way." Rayfa stomped her foot, kicking up some dirt. "But I see how you look at that girl! The tangerine haired girl with horn head!"

I looked down at the ground. "You can't tell anyone Rayfa. Mother and Nahyuta would be so disappointed." The two of us headed into Rayfa's chambers to talk. As we sat, I started to explain myself.

"I don't cut corners. I make a point to be on time. Head of the royal priests and priestesses. I..."

Rayfa looked at me in concern. "Are you alright?" I took a deep breath. "I was adopted when I was two. My 'parents' spoiled me rotten. Often, I ask myself, what did I do to get as far as I've gotten?" Rayfa looked at me in surprise. "You have accomplished many things! You can channel spirits, perform the divination seance, and so much more!"

I bit my lip. "That's why I can't slip up, Rayfa. But...a pretty girl walked by me and my heart gave a flutter, but I didn't dare say a word..." She looked sad. "But why? That's love, is it not?" I shrugged. "That would be absurd behavior for the crown princess of Khura'in. I can't risk putting out family through another scandal."
...

Later that night, I found myself talking with Athena. We sat in my room, laughing and joking. My suitor had arrived late, so we would meet tomorrow.

Athena took all of my attention. I took in each of her quirks and expressions, each one being so beautiful. As we sat there, she started to run her hands through my hair. It was calming and relaxing. I looked at her. She stared back at me. Then, the moment slowed down as we both started to lean in. I muttered. "A-Athena..."

Then, her lips were on mine.

The whole thing felt so surreal. Her soft lips on mine. Her hands pulling me closer to her.

Then, I heard the door open.

I tried to pull away as quickly as I could, but the damage had already been done.

Nahyuta stood in the doorway, clutching his prayer beads with one hand. Without a word, he turned and walked away. I looked at Athena.

"I'll be right back..."

I hurried out of the room to catch up with Nahyuta. When I found him, he was speaking with our mother. I spoke. "Nahyuta..." He turned to me. "(Y/n), I accept every part of your soul, but ascending to the throne without a husband or with another woman could spark outrage among the people. And you must be able to produce an heir in the future."

I turned to my mother. "Mother, I don't like-" She simply shook her head. "Deny the truth...It's easier, my child." Nahyuta nodded. "You're just confused, believe her. There's nothing there." I ignored the lump in my throat and nodded. "I...I understand. I have a duty to the people and it is an honor to fulfill that duty."

Nahyuta smiled. "Father would be proud of you. You should sleep to prepare for tomorrow." I bit my lip. "Of course. Goodnight Nahyuta, mother." I turned and quickly rushed back to my room. Athena was already gone, leaving me alone.

I changed into my nightclothes and extinguished all the lights in my room before slipping into my bed. Only then, did the tears fall.

'It's never worth it...Being crown princess of Khura'in...'
