I sat up, staring at the empty side of my bed. I turned, shaking my head as I got out of bed. I got dressed and brushed my hair before heading to the kitchen. I stopped in the living room, staring at the console.

I bit my lip, swallowing the lump in my throat. It was still on. I couldn't bring myself to touch the console.

You be my princess and I'll be your toad. I'll follow behind you on rainbow road. Protect you from red shells. Wherever we go. I promise...

I went into the kitchen. On the dining room table sat a picture of Apollo and I at the space museum after the phantom was arrested. I picked the photo up, a sad smile making it's way onto my face. I closed my eyes as they began to sting with the familiar burning pain of tears. I put the picture down, fingers brushing over Apollo's smiling face.

No one will touch us if we pick up a star. And If you spin out, you can ride in my car. When we slide together, we generate sparks in our wheels and our hearts.

I grabbed a granola bar and headed back to the living room. I sat on the couch, my eyes flickering to the console. I turned the TV on. The game immediately popped up on the screen.  The paused screen displayed the same date from when the 'incident' happened. I pressed the button on the controller and took a screenshot of the screen, before unpausing it. The screens were dual split, showing Toad in one car and Toadette in another.

And the finish line is just around the bend. I'll pause this game, so our love will never end. Let's go again...

I took a screenshot of that before resetting. It took me back to the title screen. I pressed start and selected a character and a track cup to race. The familiar sound of the whistle reached my ears. I started the race.

My mind started to wander back to that day. Everything went wrong.

Surprisingly enough, that day was my birthday. Apollo had decided to throw me a surprise party and invite everyone we knew. I had fun and after everyone left, the two of us cuddled on the couch, playing a few rounds of Mario Kart.

That was when someone broke into the house. They forced the front door open. Apollo grabbed the bat from the corner and turned to me, whispering, "Go to our room. Call the police." I gripped his arm, "Apollo..." He kissed my forehead, "I'll be right behind you. Everything will be fine, I promise." I turned and left the room, just as I got to the hall, I saw someone in all black jump Apollo.

The blue shell is coming, so I'll go ahead. If you hang behind it'll hit me instead. But never look back, 'cause I'm down but not dead. I'll catch up to you.

I saw the glint of metal and then a scream pierced the air. Apollo slumped to the ground. Tears fell from my eyes as I ran to our room. I called the police and they arrived within 10 minutes, arresting the man. Athena came right as they loaded Apollo into the ambulance.

She held me, "It's going to be alright, (Y/n). He's strong." I hugged her back, "H-He promised me, 'thena. He promised..."

After that, she drove me to the hospital. I sat in the waiting room for hours, hoping that Apollo would be alright. The doctor came out and spoke to me, "Mr. Justice has just gotten out of surgery. He had a severe knife wound just above his left hip." I nodded, "Can I see him, please?"

The doctor sighed, "Yes, but you must understand, Mr. Justice is in a coma but we are unable to determine when or if he will wake up." I bit my lip, "Just please, take me to him."

A few minutes later, I found myself sitting next to the hospital bed. I held Apollo's hand as tears rolled down my cheeks. The beeping of the heart monitor filled the overwhelming silence. Within the next few hours, Athena told everyone the news.

I stayed by Apollo's side for weeks until everyone forced me to go home.

I was snapped out my thoughts by liquid hitting my hands. I paused the game and wiped at my face. I was crying. I wiped the tears away and tried to keep playing, but I just cried even more. My eyes moved to the shelf above the console.

A small black box stared back at me.

It was in Apollo's pocket at the time of the incident.

He was going to propose.

Just then, my phone started ringing.

The ID read 'Athena'. I picked it up, "What's up, Athena?" She spoke, her voice heavy with tears and happiness.

"He's awake."

I froze, "W-What?"

Oh...and the finish line is just around the bend. I'll pause this game, so our love will never end...

She continued.

"Apollo's awake."
