First Fire as Chief

Matt's POV

As I sat in the office, I was currently speaking with Boden. He wanted to check everything. "Boden, I promise...I am fine and have delegated tasks." But, I knew he was still concerned. Mostly about the fact Gabby was back as PIC. "And Gabby? She is under you again." I sighed. "I have asked Hermann to be the middle man between the two of us." I hoped that Boden would like that idea. "That sounds perfect. I should be back in the new year."

I smiled, agreeing with him when I heard the bells go off. "Boden, I need to go. Where are your car keys?" He chuckled. "They are always in the truck. Good luck." I then hung up and ran out to grab my gear. By instinct, I started to run to the truck before going to the Chief's car. I went to get in and found the keys, turning them on before watching as the trucks and then ambulance went out. I gulped when the ambulance went out before me because I knew Gabby was in it.

However, I knew that I had to put that on the backburner. I was not a husband right now, I was chief. I needed to lead my men. Driving towards the fire, I saw it was an apartment fire....at the apartment building next to our old apartment. I nodded and then sighed as I parked the truck and shut it off. Getting out, I knew it was time to get work.

As I walked out to the buildings, I looked at the men before looking at Gabby. I saw her telling me to breathe. I nodded and smiled at her before yelling. "Severide, Hermann....you remember how you fought the fire at our apartment next door?" They both turned to look at me and nodded. "Same routine, however half of squad goes in from the top to rescue the people up top. Hermann get the ladder up and Severide, start climbing."

Severide looked at me, liking the idea. "Smart." He then went and looked at his men as half of them started to go to the ladder. I then watched as Hermann got his hoses set up. "Hermann, forget about the fire hydrant! There's a water access inside. Get going!" Hermann then nodded and the truck ran in. I saw the water get connected before turning to look at our old apartment. I realized that one part of the buildings were connected. I then reminded them.

I grabbed my radio and called Severide. "Severide, do the back corner first. That side is already compromised as it was slightly affected by the fire that took our apartment. It might be weaker." Severide then radioed back. "Got it Chief." He then took my orders and I watched as the team worked together (with my background as a former resident) of the building's setup. I then started to see smoke. "Severide, I am giving you 5 minutes left. The smoke is turning grey. When it's black and I say get out....you get out!"

Severide radioed back again. "Got it Chief." I then radioed Hermann. "Hermann, what's the situation in the ground floors?" Hermann then radioed back. "Clear Chief, water will start soon." I then nodded and just left it up to the two of them to make decisions, knowing they are both good at what they do and that I can trust them. I then turned to look at Gabby as she got her ambo set up. She smiled at me and told me I was doing a great job just by the way she looked at me. I then went back to concentrating on my job, happy to take this role on.
