There was something about her that was so familiar to me. I don't know what it was. I'm not sure if it was the way she laughed that I could have sworn I've heard before, or if it was the way she had great sarcastic answers to everything. But there was something about her that really reminded me of someone. We set up the dinner and sat down. While we were eating we began to talk about life and all the things we have been through. Suddenly the story of the day they adopted Harley came up.
"We had been trying for a baby for many years but had no success. After many failed attempts, and very expensive in vitro fertilization, we decided to look into adoption" said Nancy.
"We actually just went to ask some questions and get more information the day we saw Harley," continued Oliver.
"She was so cute and tiny. She was only two months old, the youngest one there at the time. I couldn't keep my eyes off of her, even though I didn't know anything about her at the time."
Nancy continued to talk and explain how the whole adopting process went by. They wanted to take Harley right away of course, since they both fell in love. But, as we all know, adopting a child is a long process and a lot of paperwork. As Nancy and Oliver continued talking, Harley had a smile on her face. She was happy that such loving and caring people had decided to adopt her. I was happy for her. We all heard stories about what some adoptive children go through, Harley has a lucky one. Suddenly Nancy said something that caught my attention.
"The day we finalized her papers and we made Harley part of our family was the happiest day of my life, along with her two sisters who could come later on that in a way I couldn't even dream about. We were so excited when she went from being Harley Anderson to Harley Warden."
"Anderson?"
"Yes, that was Harleys biological last name" answered Oliver.
"There is no way" I thought to myself. He never talked about his family, as a matter of fact I didn't know anything about them. He wasn't the type to sit and share personal experience and family stories with the rest of us. If anything, he was always the quiet one who mostly just made us all laugh with his sarcastic answers. Then suddenly it hit me, that's why Harley was so familiar to me. I don't know why I didn't see the resemblance right away. She was just like Dan.
My friend from Duskwood, Dan. His name is Daniel Anderson. But there is no way, right? I mean there is just absolutely no way!!! It had to be some kind of a weird coincidence. The way Harley laughed, the way she would raise her eyebrow when something didn't go her way. The way she always had sarcastic answers to everything. And, not to mention she looked a lot like Dan too.
I didn't even realize that I hadn't been listening to a word they were saying, until they all got quiet and just looked at me. I wanted to scream on top of my lungs and say that I found her brother. But I couldn't, not until I was a thousand percent sure. I mean Dan would have mentioned something, right? But he was also just a child when it happened. He couldn't have remembered much. If it wasn't for the pictures Harley wouldn't have even known she had a brother at all.
"There she goes again, she is always lost in her thoughts." I heard Oliver say.
"Sorry, I was just thinking about something."
"We were saying the dinner was delicious. You did an amazing job. Everything was so good."
"Oh thank you. I am so glad you guys enjoyed it. What about you girls? Did you all like it too?"
"Yes we did. We ate everything off our plates" both Nicole and Mikaela answered.
"So does that mean you girls are ready for some sweets???"
