My heart had been broken way too many times to survive another time.
Jake was either going to be the glue that finally managed to put all the pieces back together, or...he was going to be the hammer that broke it once and for all.
"What are you thinking about?" asked Silas.
"Hmm... I wouldn't even know where to begin," I responded.
"It's normal to worry, you know? But, everything is going to be okay. Just watch!"
"I really hope so. I don't think I can take much longer of this suffering and torture. I just want it to finally end. However, it ends."
"It's going to end well. I just know it. You deserve a happy ending. This might not be the right time to say this, but...if I don't say it now, I might never get the chance."
I just looked at him. I knew where this was heading, and I didn't know how to feel about it. Silas was the first person I might have actually felt a connection with during the time I was with Jake. Silas was my first heartbreak. He was the first person I had to say my final goodbye to, and I was absolutely devastated. Now, seeing him alive felt like a dream. A dream I had prayed for at least a hundred thousand times.
"You were the first person I trusted in a very long time. I felt a connection with you that I didn't think was even possible. Leaving you was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Knowing how much pain I caused you was something that I had nightmares over night after night. I haven't been completely honest with you…"
"What?!? What do you mean?" I asked shockingly.
He looked at me without being able to say anything. Automatically, shivers passed down my spine because the first thing I thought about was Jake and that something was wrong with him.
"I know the people that killed your parents."
"EXCUSE ME? WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN YOU KNOW THE PEOPLE???"
"They used to work with me a long time ago. We used to do hacking jobs together. They got into a lot of trouble and spent years behind bars. I didn't even know that they got out. But when I heard the news I couldn't believe it. I wanted to tell you right away when I first saw you, but I didn't think it was appropriate."
"You didn't think it was appropriate to tell me that you know my parents' killers? You didn't think it was appropriate to tell me the names of the man that almost killed my daughter? Wow!!! I can't fucken believe you, Silas."
"I'm really sorry. I should have told you, you deserved to at least know that."
"So then tell me now. What the fuck are you waiting for? Don't you realize those are the same people that work for the man without a face now?"
"The man that you killed is Leon Bauer. He is German and used to work for the government before he turned his back and gave up information about them. Once he escaped, that's when I met him. The other man that was there that day was Igor Kovalev. He was from Russia and was working for one of the biggest mafia until he gave up information on them and he had to run and hide. That's when I meet most people...when they run and want to be someone else. They were good at what they did…"
"I'm sorry? They were good at what they did? Like what huh? Kill innocent people? Scare little children? Tear families apart? Is that what they were good at?"
"No! They were never involved in murder, at least not before you know, your parents. That's why I couldn't understand when I saw it on the news. I couldn't believe what I was seeing."
"Oh boo hoo how sad for them!!! They got what they deserved and even death wasn't the right punishment for them. They deserved to suffer more. But I guess you wouldn't understand that huh? Since you guys were friends and stuff? But I guess you must have forgotten that it was probably the same motherfuckers that tried to kill me when you got shot."
