I sighed, resigned once again to Tauriel's insistence.
"Do you ever think you may just push it too far one day?"
She smiles at me. "It was how I gained such a position in the first place."
"Tauriel, the King is not going to like this."
"Which is why, as his adviser, you must talk him down for me."
"Again."
Her eyes go wide and she gives me very sad, sweet and innocent look.
Rolling my eyes, I let an impatient huff of air. "Fine, but know Tauriel, even my word only goes so far with the king."
Tauriel bounces forward and hugs me tightly. "Thank you my friend."
I watch her go, a sinking feeling in my heart. The King was strained of late and this was not going to help.
There is a light brush against my shoulder and I look around to find Thranduil there, his blue eyes calm and curious.
"And where would our Captain of the Guard be off to?"
I brace myself for his reaction. "To seek out the heart of the nest of the spiders. They will keep returning and haunting our lands otherwise."
Thranduil's expression made it of clear of his displeasure. "The heart of the nest lies beyond our borders."
I nod. "Yes, but if we do not stop the infestation there, then our homes will always be under threat."
"It is not our concern."
"Thranduil-"
But he stops me, dipping his head to place a swift kiss to my lips, causing me to freeze.
"Anyone could have seen that." I breath as he pulls away, a smirk on his lips.
"Indeed." He waves a hand, starting to walk away. "I will deal with Tauriel when she returns. I trust your judgement won't be skewed because she is your friend?"
A wave of cold clasped me. "My King, she is doing what is right for our people."
"And disobeying my orders. There is no sway in this, dear." He leaves the room and I can't help but feel this could get a lot worse.
Tauriel ended up being lucky, the team she took with her, including Legolas, Thranduil's son, ended up coming across a group of dwarves.
Dwarves that were heading towards Erebor.
This had Thranduil's full attention now, so Tauriel's punishment was forgotten.
Thranduil refused to allow me to be present while he interrogated the dwarf king, and this had me worried. I knew his temper could the better of him, and from I knew of dwarves, they didn't have an even temperament either.
I found him alone sometime later.
"My King?"
He turns from gazing into the small pool to look at me, his blue eyes quickly hiding what he was feeling, but I had seen it. He looks at several of the guards in the room.
"Leave us."
They walk away, leaving just the two of us in the room.
"I am alright." He begins. "You did not have to come see me."
I folded my arms. "Don't lie to me Thranduil. What happened?"
He sighs. "The dwarves are as stubborn as ever. I offered my help, but he was very insistent that he did not want it."
