You opened your bag and automatically sighed. Yet again, it had been filled with silver trinkets and baubles.
"Nori," You sighs and look at the dwarf. "I understand that you have a thieving habit to attend to, but must you put it in my bag?"
The dwarf blushed furiously. "Sorry Y/N, you are just...the least unassuming out of all of us. It seems like a good hiding spot."
You start to take the trinkets out of your bag. "Well, find another hiding spot. I'm tired and much prefer sleeping instead of pulling out all your things all the time."
The other dwarves of the Company watched as you continued to pull out all his things and a very red faced Nori, came and collected them. Dori was rubbing the bridge of his nose as Ori stifled giggles, but both failed your notice.
It had been a rough couple of months with the dwarves, and as much as they made you laugh, they were getting very much on your nerves.
Thorin was always surly and his answers short, Dwalin not much better. Balin was friendlier and liked to talk, very much the father figure of the group. The prince brothers didn't miss an opportunity to prank anyone, especially you. Bofur, you became convinced, held a secret because he laughed so much. Bombur snored. Bifur you couldn't understand. Oin and Gloin didn't really like talking to you. Dori and Ori seemed too friendly to you, and Nori, Nori was always putting his stuff in your bag.
That left the hobbit and the wizard, and neither of them were overly good for your sanity either. The wizard talked in riddles and the hobbit was scared that things were going to attack him every two seconds.
So you were kind of on your own, even though Gandalf had warned you of such a thing.
It was almost a reprieve to reach Rivendell. You looked forward to having time to yourself.
It didn't quite turn out that way.
You had just cleaned up and were about to head back to your room, when movement caught your eye. Stopping, you glared at the spot where someone had just been, until they reappeared.
It was Nori.
His face currently the same shade as his hair, he didn't meet your eye as you glared at him.
"What are you doing Nori?" You ask, folding your arms.
"I...um," It was clear he was trying to come up with something. "I was making sure you were alright."
You raise an eyebrow. "Really? And I don't suppose that that entailed watching me while I bathed?"
He shook his head violently. "Oh no miss, never! That would be very low of me and I would never do such a thing to one as beautiful as-" He stopped, choking over his words.
"Then what were doing Nori? You don't just sneak around me for no reason." You ignored his stuttering, although a little colour had flooded your cheeks. "And no lying." You knew the dwarf well, even after only a few months, your first proper meeting you had caught him trying to lift a locket from your pocket, and it didn't take you long to pick up on the rest of his habits.
Nori sighed and held out his hands, holding three new trinkets, clearly lifted from somewhere within Rivendell.
"Nori..." You sigh. "We are guests here, don't you think that is slightly inappropriate?"
"Well, they aren't using it." He shrugs. "I can't help it if it's just sitting there for the taking."
"And I suppose you were going to put that into my bag?"
Slowly and carefully, he nods.
"Well, I don't want you to, so please go return them." I gave him a serious look. "I have a feeling that the elves will be a little more cautious about when we leave."
You fail to see his shoulders to sink slightly as he nods and leaves you be. You sigh again and move away to your room.
A few hours later, engrossed in a book, there was a knock on your door.
"Come in." You say, not looking up from your book as you finished the paragraph.
You were very surprised to see Dori there.
"Dori? What can I do you for?" You smile warmly, putting the book down.
But Dori looked anything but happy, his normally kind face very serious. "Just what do you think you are doing to my brother lass?"
You stared at him, a little stunned at his aggression. "What?"
"He's been trying to court you since you met, and you just seem to enjoy playing games with him! Just turn him down if you are not interested." Dori says hotly, folding his arms.
Now you were stunned, your jaw dropping a little. "Nori...has been trying to court me?"
"Yes," He breathes heavily with a frown. "Why do you think all those trinkets have been put in your bag? They are gifts, it is all he has to give you, and you keep acting as if they are something terrible. Now are you interested in my brother or not?"
You stared at Dori, still not entirely sure how to respond to this new information. "Dori...I didn't even know that that was what he was doing, so how on earth can I answer that?"
Dori stares at you, trying to work out whether you were serious. "You...you didn't know?" You shook your head. "So you were just always scalding him for thieving?"
"Yes, because I thought that that was all he was doing." Colour was creeping into your cheeks. "Why didn't he just tell me?"
"Because he didn't know how. He figured if he brought you all that he stole, that that would prove that he cared." Dori's gaze softened. "Here I was thinking you were just playing with him, but you were clearly just as oblivious as he."
Your cheeks were burning now. "I feel like an idiot. I didn't think that giving trinkets were a part of dwarvish custom?"
Dori nods and turns to leave. "I will go and get him."
"What?!" You gasp. "Dori, that's hardly fair-"
But he was gone, leaving you to do some very fast thinking.
Nori appeared a little time later, looking a little nervous. "Dori said you wanted to speak to me?"
You sitting on the bed, and ran a very nervous hand through your hair. "Well, he didn't give me much of a choice in the matter." Nori tilted his head and you sigh. "He...he brought it to my attention that you have been trying to court me."
Nori's face turned red.
"Now, I had no idea, I want you to understand that." You continue carefully. "So I did not intentionally hurt your feelings or anything, and I would never do such a thing. I'm sorry that I've been such an idiot."
Nori seemed to draw in a deep breath, his head nodding for a moment before he realised what he was doing. "Well...would you allow me to court you?"
Your faces pretty much match each others colour.
Slowly, you nod. "I'm...willing to give it a shot."
He beams, one of the brightest smiles that you had ever seen him give.
"But Nori?"
His grin falters for a moment, looking worried. "What?"
"Try...try to hold off on the stealing, at least not as much." You smile as he looked slightly relieved. "I'm just going to be happy with you, I don't need multiple trinkets to be happy or know that you care."
He bows, slipping something back into his pocket. "As you wish my lady."
"I saw that Nori."
"I don't know what you are talking about." He was grinning from ear to ear, and he turns to leave, looking as innocent as possible.
All you can do, is laugh.
