Over the next three weeks, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev savored every moment that they could with their two children, spending as much time with them as possible. But with both of them being residents, after those three weeks were over, it was time for Alex to return to work.

You work, you study, you prepare...

The day that he returned was right in time for the day when all the fifth-year residents participated in solo surgeries, which instantly made his wife jealous. They sat in the kitchen while Mallory held Charlotte, feeding her a bottle, while Carter was off in his room, playing with toys.

"Are you excited for your solo surgery?" Mallory questioned as she eyed her husband. "I mean, I know you've done it before, but this is completely on your own."

"I am pretty excited," Alex admitted with a nod. "As long as everything goes well."

"I wish I could come in and see it," Mallory complained with a dramatic sigh. "I'm gonna miss it."

Alex's brows furrowed as he made sure to remind her. "You had Charlie less than three weeks ago, Mal. You two need to stay home and relax. Take a nap or something. That's why I'm taking Carter to daycare."

"It's not the same. I can't just sit here with the baby all day," Mallory was quick to continue. "Charlotte can't talk to me, so all I'm gonna do is clean and rearrange the apartment. I've already rearranged the living room three times."

"That's part of maternity leave," Alex insisted, not backing down on his stance. "Though, I think I like the furniture where it's at."

"Don't get used to it," Mallory retorted with a shake of her head. "Haven't you noticed how shiny the floors are?"

All Alex could do was shrug his shoulders as he glanced down at the kitchen floor, seeing that it was shinier than it had been during the years he had first lived there. And when he looked back at his wife, she had her arms crossed against her chest.

Months and years leading to one day...

"Now that you say it, I think Carter will be able to see his own reflection," Alex tried to joke before he leaned back in his chair to call out. "Speaking of, Carter! You have like ten more minutes to play with your toys, and then we'll have to leave!"

"The floors are that clean because when you had to go into the hospital to confirm your return-to-work date, I scrubbed them for three hours," Mallory stressed to her husband. "Three hours, Alex."
