In one of the hospital bathrooms, Mallory Shepherd was gathered inside with Lexie Grey and April Kepner. When she continued to be emotional and exhausted, the possibility of being pregnant dawned on her. And all she could do was hope that she was wrong.

How much can you actually accomplish in an hour?

While Mallory was inside the bathroom stall, taking the test, Lexie and April stood at the counter together. They kept an eye on the door, even though it was locked, prepared for someone to start knocking to ask what they were doing.

"I mean, sure, I've been a little on the emotional side," Mallory ranted to her friends. "Carter just turned one. I mean, he just turned one. There's no way I can be pregnant."

"You're right," Lexie tried to agree with her. "I mean, you aren't late, right?"

"Well—"

"I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason why you're late," April took a turn at being optimistic, trying to tell Mallory what she wanted to hear. "It could be stress. And you have a toddler during residency, of course you're stressed."

Run an errand maybe?

Sit in traffic?

Get an oil change?

Lexie started to shake her head as she objected. "No, April, you don't get to sympathize with her. I've been down this road before. We're hiding in the bathroom because someone is completely freaking out."

With a scoff, Mallory went to deny. "I am not freaking out—"

"No, she is," Lexie was quick to interrupt. "And Mallory is failing to disclose what will happen after this. There's a small chance that she won't tell Alex right away, and I will gain five pounds again keeping a pregnancy a secret."

"And," Mallory made sure to add. "You are such a good friend because of it."

Still, April continued with her optimism. "There's a chance that you're not even pregnant."

When you think about it, an hour isn't very long.

After Mallory came out of the bathroom stall, she placed the test down on the counter while she sat down on the floor against the wall. When she started the timer, she knew it would feel like the longest five minutes of her life.
