The morning before Alex Karev's shift, Mallory Shepherd insisted that they stop by Meredith and Derek's house. Alex had tried to object, but when his wife was quick to question why, he dropped any objections he had to the visit.
We've all heard the same...
While Alex was in the kitchen, feeding Carter his breakfast, Mallory stood in the living room with Derek Shepherd. The two of them stood by the front window while they talked, leaving their spouses alone in the other room, out of earshot.
"So," Derek turned to his sister as he questioned. "How do you feel about your chances of being Chief Resident?"
"Do you really think I have a leg to stand on with that?" Mallory raised a brow in response. "I've known that from the beginning of the race."
"Come on, you're pregnant," Derek made sure to point out. "He can't discriminate because of that."
"No, but it doesn't help that being pregnant has taken away my time to shine. Plus, I have a toddler at home," Mallory was quick to counter. "They're probably doing me a favor anyway; Callie's told me how hard the position is."
It's one of those things we've learned in seventh-grade science class.
Derek nodded along as he replied. "That's fair."
"Now, my only worry is that he's gonna give Chief Resident to Alex," Mallory admitted with a sigh. "I mean, he brought kids from Africa."
"Why would that be a worry?" Derek questioned with furrowed brows. "He seems to be really excited about the position."
"It's just, I'm scared about the amount of stress that it'll put on our marriage. We're about to have a second kid; I don't think Chief Resident should be added to the mix," Mallory revealed with a simple shrug of her shoulders. "Please don't tell Alex I said anything. It's probably just pregnancy brain."
Adapt or die...
All Derek could do was raise a brow, surprised by his sister's honesty as he made sure to remind her. "I think the two of you are stronger than you think. You two have been through a lot, and you always come out on top."
"Thank you," Mallory made sure to reply. "I need to drill that into my mind."
"Random question. Has Meredith mentioned anything to you?" Derek suddenly asked. "Anything that would explain why she's acting weird?"
