When my mother left my father, she didn't tell him she was leaving and taking me with her until we'd landed on the other side of the country.
In those days, it was called family troubles...
Today it'd be called kidnapping.
In the trauma room, Miranda Bailey had the four residents standing behind her as she showed them the patient they would be working on. She looked each one of them in the eye as she presented the case, making sure they took her seriously.
"She was pinned under her car, her leg was amputated in a pit of dirt, her abdomen is pulp, and her pelvis is probably crushed," Bailey explained to her underlings. "You will work together to assess her injuries and repair them."
"Oh," April was the first to respond, her brows furrowed. "In the OR?"
"No, at the Jiffy Lube. Yes, in the OR," Bailey sarcastically retorted. "Now, Doctor Torres will supervise your work. If you're killing her, she will step in. Otherwise, you're on your own. Don't screw this up like you screw up everything else you've touched lately. Ladies and gentlemen, you may begin treating the patient."
Each resident worked on a different part of the woman's body, and their plans for the course of treatment started to conflict with one another. Each one of them focused on their own strengths and what they could see with their own two eyes.
"All right, it's an open book pelvis fracture," April presented the case to her fellow residents. "And a comminuted femur fracture."
"Hey," Jackson turned to the others as he asked. "Has anyone fully examined the stump?"
"Pneumopericardium and an enlarged cardiac shadow," Cristina added next. "She needs a chest tube and a CT. There's free fluid."
"She needs an OR," Alex was quick to clarify. "An embolization and angio would help stabilize the bleeding."
"An angio's just gonna waste time," Cristina disagreed, but still considered his idea of taking her straight into surgery. "We could pack her in the OR."
"Call the OR," Alex tried to order. "Tell them to prep for an emergent laparotomy."
April's eyes went wide as she persisted with her opinion. "Hello? A CT. Excuse me, I'm telling you guys—"
"No," Cristina interrupted with a shake of her head, paying no attention to what April had even said. "Something is wrong with her heart."
When Owen Hunt walked into the trauma room, he immediately went to step in, knowing how the residents had been acting. But before he had a chance to even make it fully through the door, he was stopped by Bailey.
