After a trauma, your body is at its most vulnerable. Response time is critical. So you're suddenly surrounded by people...
Down in the NICU, Sofia Robbin Sloan-Torres was surrounded by nurses and doctors, along with Alex Karev, keeping a close eye on the baby. Meanwhile, Mallory Shepherd, Cristina Yang, Arizona Robbins, and Miranda Bailey gathered in Callie Torres's room.
They all watched as Callie attempted to stretch out her fingers. Which to some might be a tiny, mundane accomplishment. But for her, it meant that she would be one step closer to holding and seeing her baby.
"This is just one more step," Mallory encouraged her best friend. "Stretch your fingers, and you're one step closer."
"Go, go," Bailey added next. "You got it."
Doctors, nurses...
"Focus," Cristina made sure to advise. "Focus."
"Come on," Arizona crossed her fingers as she muttered. "Come on, come on."
Specialists, technicians...
Surgery is a team sport...
Everyone pushing for the finish line...
When Callie managed to stretch her fingers the tiniest of a bit, everyone erupted into cheers. They all clapped as they smiled widely, more than ready to celebrate one of Callie's first accomplishments on her road to recovery.
"All right!" everyone cheered for her. "Good job!"
"Yeah," Callie sarcastically retorted with a forced smile. "Woo-hoo. Exciting."
Putting you back together again.
Everyone was quick to notice her pessimistic attitude. Arizona went over to her fiancee as she insisted. "Okay. It's okay. You're retraining your brain. Getting your fingers straight was the goal for today."
"Mhm."
"You could at least say yes, Callie," Mallory pointed out. "You know we're right."
"Little goals," Arizona persisted with her optimism. "Remember?"
