When Mallory Shepherd got to the hospital to start her shift, she had Carter on her hip. The ten-month-old smiled widely as they walked in, glancing around for his father, who had started his shift earlier that morning.
Both Owen Hunt and Meredith Grey were already on the elevator when Mallory stepped on. Carter directed his smile at Owen as he waved at him, and Owen waved back, the sight of her son seeming to brighten his mood.
The first 24 hours after surgery are critical...
"Well, someone is happy to see Owen today," Mallory said as she let out a chuckle. "How's Cristina been doing?"
"I think it's just something about me," Owen replied as he continued to wave at Carter. "But Cristina's been fine—"
"Don't listen to him," Meredith was quick to object. "She's fishing with your brother."
"She's fishing with Derek?" Mallory repeated as her brows began to furrow. "Come on, you're joking, right?"
Every breath you take, every fluid you make is meticulously recorded and analyzed...
Celebrated or mourned...
All Owen could do was shrug his shoulders as he confirmed. "Yes, she's fishing. So what?"
"I mean, there's nothing wrong with it," Mallory insisted, even though she seemed hesitant about her statement. "I just never thought that Cristina would step foot on a fishing boat. I don't even like fishing."
With a roll of her eyes, Meredith concluded. "Well, your brother is certain that he can help her."
"You know, that's a good point," Mallory considered the thought, even though Meredith had meant it in a sarcastic way. "When Derek has his mind set to something, he's usually capable of pulling off the impossible."
But what about the next 24 hours?
When the elevator stopped on the next floor, Teddy Altman got on the elevator. She smiled at the others as she greeted them. "Good morning. Good morning, Carter. Aren't you just a happy little guy today?"
"Good morning, Doctor Altman," Mallory had Carter wave back at Teddy. "He just loves the attention he gets walking through the hospital."
"Oh," Teddy's eyes went wide as she asked. "How's Cristina?"
