When Mallory Shepherd woke up early the next morning, she realized that her husband wasn't in bed next to her. Instead, it was just her and Carter that were tucked into there bed, and Alex Karev was nowhere to be seen.

Even good marriages fail.

One minute you're standing on solid ground...

It was then that she realized that she had gone back to the hospital when he had said that he would be taking a shower the night prior, which she knew that she should have expected, given his guilty conscience.

Right when they had gotten back home the night before, Holly Rothschild and Wilder Mellon flew back to New York, telling Mallory to keep them updated on when she had the baby, as well as the ongoing progression of what happened between Meredith, Derek, and Alex.

The next minute, you're not.

She called out for him, but as she expected, there was no answer, which made her mumble. "You know, I should've known that you were going back to the hospital. But still, you could've left a note."

The moment that she got out of the bed, she woke up Carter from his sleep. The toddler sat up, rubbing his eyes as he glanced around the room. And instantly, Mallory knew exactly who he was searching for.

"Dad?"

"He's already at work, buddy," Mallory answered as she picked him up out of his crib. "But it's time to start the day."

And there's always two versions...

Yours and theirs.

Carter simply pouted in response, which made Mallory chuckle as she picked him up and brought him into the kitchen. She put him down in his high chair, which only made him continue to pout as she started making breakfast.

It wasn't long before the front door opened to reveal Lexie Grey, who was on her way to the hospital. She walked in holding a coffee and a smoothie, wanting to check how things were going with Mallory, especially after how stressful the past 24 hours had been.

"Hey, I figured I should stop by on my way to work, and I even brought you a drink," Lexie said as she joined her in the kitchen. "How's your morning going?"

"Well, my husband is nowhere to be seen," Mallory replied with a shrug of her shoulders. "You know, because he feels guilty about what happened with Meredith and Derek."
