When Mallory Shepherd woke up early the next morning, she noticed that her husband was already awake and in the bathroom with the door closed. It was a rare occasion, since he usually took the opportunity to sleep whenever it was given to him, especially when he had gone out the night before.
Every person makes mistakes.
It was that small detail mixed with the other things she had noticed during the weeks prior that made Mallory's mind confirm that something was going on. Even if she had absolutely no idea what it could be.
Since Carter was still asleep in his crib, Mallory was quick to take the opportunity to get him to talk. With how things had been left the night prior, with her being emotional over the Africa stuff, she wanted to talk to him before he rushed off to work.
"Hey, is everything okay in there?" Mallory questioned as she knocked on the door. "I mean, I know you don't have any hair for me to hold back, but I'm sure I could help somehow."

"No, it's not. I completely overreacted," Mallory made sure to counter. "I mean, is this what this is about?"
Even if it was the right thing to do, what you do can still leave you feeling terrible inside.
When Alex Karev walked out of the bathroom, Mallory could tell that he was slightly hungover from going out the night before. However, he didn't look sickly like she had expected him to, just pale in the face.
"Trust me, I'm not upset about the Africa thing," Alex told her with a shake of his head. "I shouldn't have pretended to consider it, or I shouldn't have told you about that part. Especially when it wasn't gonna happen."
"Oh, okay," Mallory nodded slowly. "But there is something wrong?"
"I just made a mistake, okay," Alex admitted as he started to walk away. "I don't want to talk about it."
"A mistake? That's a little vague," Mallory retorted as her brows started to furrow. "I mean, you didn't cheat, or—"
