Hello Floppy Dishtowels ❤
This chapter is for all of you that celebrate Hanukkah for these lovely 8 days. I know I'm a few days late and I apologize. I hope you still like it. xx
Ashton: You lit the third candle on the menorah with the shamash (candle that lights the rest of the candles for the 8 days) and smiled, feeling Ashton's arms wrap around your waist.
"It looks beautiful love." He whispered, admiring the soft glow of the candlelight. Since Ashton wasn't Jewish, you thought you'd share some of the traditions you've kept in your family. It brought you two closer together and showed him the important parts of your heritage.
"So what's this candley thing called again?" He asked, resting his head on your shoulder.
"It's called a menorah. Which means candelabrum in Hebrew. There's nine candles and eight days." You explained again, grinning at the fact that he's trying to remember everything.
"Menorah. Ok. Got it. It's really pretty." He gently touched the branches of the menorah and held you close. "I think it's neat that you're showing me what Hanukkah is. Normally this time of year is all about Christmas to a lot of people. There's a lot of traditions and holidays."
"You're starting to sound like a TV special Ash." You giggled and pulled him to the couch.
"What else do you do on Hanukkah?" He questioned, situating himself to hold you.
"Well when I was younger we got a gift on each night. I got a dreidel on one of the nights. But mostly it's a time to be with family and stay true to your values I guess."
Ashton's eyes widened.
"Eight presents? No way!" He beamed, making you laugh.
"Yes Ash. We've already missed the first two nights though."
"I don't care! We can make up for it!" You shook your head.
"Dork. I guess I could find some neat little presents like when I was a kid." Ashton immediately grabbed his keys and pulled you off the couch.
"Let's go Hanukkah this place up."
Luke: Luke watched, mesmerized by the game you played with the little dark blue dreidel. Although in this version, you played with pretzels instead of money. He was amazed at the symbols on the little piece.
"What does that one mean?" He asked, pointing to the symbol with three prongs on the top.
"That's 'shin'. It means you put one of your pretzels in the middle." You explained, handing him one of the skinny pretzels.
"Oh. I see. And what's that one?" This time he pointed to the symbol that looked like an eighth note.
"That one's called 'hey'. It means you take half of the jackpot. So you'd get eight pretzels as of now." You pushed eight of the salty snack towards his growing pile.
"Sweet! I think I got it." He spun the dreidel again and you watched as it landed on the Gimel symbol.
"How the....?" You stared in shock, wondering how he got the lucky rolls.
"What does that mean again?" He asked, nibbling on a pretzel.
"It means you get all of them." You mumbled, moving the remaining pretzels into his pile.
"I like this game." He grinned, counting his gains.
"Yeah yeah. Shut up and hand me the dreidel before I shove a pretzel up your nose." He placed the dreidel in your hand and pouted.
"That's not very Hanukkah-y of you Y/N." You sighed and took the dreidel.
"Fine. Please hand me the dreidel before I shove a pretzel up your nose."
"Rude."
At the end of the first night of Hanukkah, Luke had won all of the pretzels except for two.
Calum: "Whoa this looks great babe." Calum scans the table, looking at the assortment of some of the traditional dishes that are eaten during Hanukkah. You smiled, placing the plate of latkes beside his dish.
"Alright. Dinner on the fourth night of Hanukkah. Enjoy." You announced, sitting beside your boyfriend. He rubbed his hands together, contemplating what to dig into first. He took some of the latkes and bit into one, grunting in satisfaction.
"That's really good. I might just eat the whole plate." You served yourself and giggled.
"Just as long as I get some, you're welcome to have as much as you want."
That ended up being the case. Calum ate all of the latkes. He likes the "potato-y taste" as he called it. Dork.
"What's for dessert Y/N?" Calum poked your cheek, smiling his crinkly grin.
"I think you're going to like it." You winked, getting up to grab the treats. Calum watched you, filled with love and warmth that only you could bring. He couldn't imagine being anywhere else.
"These are called sufganiyot. Which is Hebrew and fancy for "jelly donuts". They're probably my favorite." You beamed, walking in with the plate. Calum opened his arms and brought you into his lap. You squealed and held on to the plate as best you could.
"You're staying here sweetheart. Where you belong." He whispered, holding you tight. You fed him one of the sufganiyot and laughed when the jelly seeped out onto his shirt. He didn't even care. He just looked in admiration at the person he loved.
"Happy Hanukkah Y/N."
Michael: "Y/N I found a Hanukkah song." Michael reported, setting his laptop in front of you. You raised an eyebrow and focused on the screen.
He pressed play and Adam Sandler popped up.
"Oh god." You mumbled. The song began to play.
"Put on your yarmulke
Here comes Hanukkah
So much funukah
To celebrate Hanukkah
Hanukkah is the festival of lights
Instead of one day of presents, we have eight crazy nights."
"You are ridiculous." You giggled, handing him back the laptop.
"Why? I'm just trying to understand the holiday better." He said good naturedly. You shook your head and went back to reading your book.
"Y/N there's this episode of Friends with the Holiday Armadillo and he talks about Hanukkah." Michael burst into the room excited.
"Michael calm down."
"I am calm!"
"What about a giant menorah that lights up when you say 'latkes'?"
"Do you think Hanukkah is a fun word? It's a lot of fun to say. Hanukkah. Hanukkah. Hanuuuukah."
"I love Hanukkah. It smells like hope."
(I think Michael likes Hanukkah. I was cracking up because one of my best friends told me about an experience where she was going off on these guys for being assholes and they told her to calm down. This resulted in her yelling "I am calm!"
I hope you guys liked this chapter :) It was fun to write. I am not Jewish, but I do know a few things about Hanukkah. If any of you celebrate the Festival of Lights, let me know what traditions you celebrate! I'd love to learn more!
