146: Gems's Afterlife

Normal P.O.V

‘I'm sorry, but we couldn't save Gems...’ Porlyusica's words were ringing in Gray's ears as he bursted into more tears. Gray's heart broke into a million pieces again, the hope he had was lost with those words.

Gray was in disbelief, he was feeling nauseous and stomach was churning. He was not feeling good at all.

Gray got up and grabbed Porlyusica by her collar and looked at her with wet red eyes. “How dare you... You were supposed to save him!” Gray yelled. “I trusted you! Why didn't you save him!?” Gray yelled angrily.

Erza and Natsu immediately pulled him back.

“Will you stop being such a paranoid and just listen to me?!” Porlyusica yelled back. “I care for Gems just as much as you do! So you better not pull that on me!” she added.

Gray was taken aback a bit and so were the others. Porlyusica took a deep breathe and looked at them.

“Gems is not dead, but he isn't alive either.” Porlyusica said and there was many confused looks that she received. “What I am trying to say is, he is in a comatose state, still fighting between life and death.” Porlyusica added.

“Comatose state?” Makarov asked and Porlyusica just nodded.

“A state of prolonged unconsciousness, an eyes-closed unresponsive state. The person suffering through it can not be waken up by outer interference, not even by any painful stimuli...” Porlyusica explained with a heavy heart.

“H-how long will he stay in coma?” Gray asked immediately.

“There is no specific time period. There is a possibility Gems wakes up in a few hours or a few days. There is also a possibility that he wakes up in a few months or even years...” Porlyusica said, she swallowed a lump. “And... Th-there is also a possibility that Gems might... N-never wake up ever again...” Porlyusica added while looking away.

They all gasped.

“N-no...” Gray mumbled.

“Gems used up every last bit of magic he had... With everything he went through, his fever, him using that god summoning spell, and still fighting... He lost all the capacity to inhale anymore ethernano... So if he does wake up, he won't be able to use magic at all.” Porlyusica said and Gray's heart broke.

“He did all this so that he could get his parents back, and so that his parents could feel proud of how strong his magic had gotten... And even after all this... This is what he got... Life is not fair...” Lucy cried.

“Apart from it, majority of his blood vessels were damaged, both his knees were injured, his back had some internal injuries and a dislocated shoulder... He's been through hell to save all of us.” Porlyusica said as she let her tears fall. She quickly turned around and wiped those tears away.

Everyone present there was emotional, Gems's life was ruined. He was not a wizard anymore.

“He sacrificed his future to save our future... ” Gray mumbled while looking down.

“He may be unresponsive, but he can still hear us... If you wanna check on him...” Porlyusica mumbled. Gray nodded and immediately went in.

Gray's heart sunk as he saw Gems tied up in bandages from head to toe. Gray's eyes started to water as he saw Gems laid on the bed with various machines beeping and breathing via ventilator.

“Gemsie...Gemsie... I'm r-right h-here... With you!” Gray said as he sat on his knees and held Gems's hand in his. “Please wake up... You're gonna be okay... Wake up...” Gray added.
