Dwalin's arms were feeling every movement as he swung his axe once more. The battle had been raging for what felt like hours, but Dwalin wasn't going to surrender. He refused to fail his king. Another swing, another orc down. The burly dwarf was beginning to feel battle fatigue, but he kept going. That is, until his axe was knocked out of his hands.
Dwalin stood his ground, ready for whatever was going to happen. He waited for the killing blow, but it never came. Instead, someone got between him and the orc. An elf. You, in fact. You took down the orc with one swing of your sword before you turned to Dwalin. "Watch yourself, Master Dwarf." Your voice was melodious, but full of fire from the fight. You scooped up his axe and handed it back to him. With that, you were gone.
When the battle finished, Dwalin wiped the sweat from his brow and scanned the bodies of the dead. No one in the Company appeared to be among them and Dwalin let out a sigh of relief. Then, his thoughts turned to his savior. He wanted to find and perhaps even thank you for saving his life. He didn't have to look far. You were in Dale with your king.
"Y/N and a few of my healers will remain in Dale with you, bowman. They will help as much as they can," Thranduil was saying when Dwalin approached. Y/N. That was your name. It suited you. Thranduil turned slightly to you and you bowed in respect. Once Thranduil had left, Dwalin drew closer to you.
"Pleasure to see you're still alive, Master Dwarf," you greeted without looking at him. Dwalin stopped in his tracks. You turned to him and smiled. "Thank ya, lass. Fer savin' me," he said and turned to leave. "You do not have to thank me. While my king holds no love for dwarves, I do not find you so bad. No one deserves to die at the hands of an orc. You fight well."
Dwalin couldn't help the pride he felt in his chest and he wasn't sure why. It wasn't as if he didn't know he was a fierce warrior. He did, it was just hearing you, a beautiful woman, albeit an elf, complimenting his skills. You chuckled at the look on the dwarf's face and Dwalin looked at you. It appeared that you were far more open about your emotions that most other elves Dwalin had met. "It appears as though I inflated your ego a bit." Dwalin laughed and shook his head.
The easy banter continued between the two of you as made your way through Dale to attend the wounded. When you'd done all you could, you turned back to Dwalin. "And what of your kin? Have you a healer or do believe some assistance will be required?" Dwalin thought for a moment before he shrugged. In truth, he had no idea if Oin or Dain's healer would need help, but it couldn't hurt. Besides, he wasn't sure he was ready to part with your company yet, no matter how tired he was.
You followed Dwalin back toward the Mountain. You were tired as well, but the need to help overwhelmed that. You'd always been that way. Initially, you'd wanted to be a healer. You studied hard but your weapon skills surpassed your healing skill and you ended up a part of King Thranduil's guard instead. Now you had a chance to help without having to fight anymore.
No sooner had you both approached the dwarves were you at work. Dwalin watched in awe as you readily assisted dwarven healers. "Brother! Where have you been?!" Dwalin almost didn't hear his brother's voice. His eyes were glued to you. He could see how the dwarves eyed you with distrust, but allowed you to help them all the same. "Ah. Distracted I see." Balin quipped making Dwalin glare at him. "She saved my life out there and now she's going 'round helpin' whoever she can with no thought as ta her own fatigue."
"Why, Brother, I do believe you are smitten with the lass." Dwalin merely glared at his brother again before making his way over to Oin, who was waving him over. Oin made him sit to look him over, but Dwalin's gaze found you again. You were flitting around like a bird from one wounded dwarf to another. Dwalin sighed knowing that Balin was right. He was smitten and there was nothing he could do about it. Not that he wanted to. You glanced up, saw Dwalin gaping at you, and smiled at him. Dwalin felt his face heat up and he fought back a groan. He was acting like a young dwarrow not the seasoned warrior he was. He only hoped that the feeling would go away.
It never did. It hadn't gone away the next day. Nor the next week or month. Not even the next year. It hadn't faded years later when the dwarf finally got up the courage to ask for your hand. It didn't fade once the two of you married.Nor did it disappear when you announced that you were with child. In fact, with each passing day, year, even each small moment, Dwalin's love for you grew. It continued to grow every moment for the rest of your lives.
