(a/n: I know I just posted a Lindir one, but this is what my brain had inspiration for!)

You and your best friend Lindir loved reading mystery novels. You always tried to guess who the culprit was before you got to the end. Actually, the two of you were rather obsessed. So much so, that the people in town often asked you for help with every day mysteries such as things going missing. That was what prompted you to become Private Detectives and you were on the case yet again.

"When is this guy gonna do something? I'm bored!" you groaned. You and Lindir were currently sitting vigil waiting for your target to make a move. This was your least favorite part of the job. You hated being cooped up for long periods of time. But Lindir said he needed you. Lindir, for all his patience and calm exterior, couldn't read human emotion and behavior the way you could. He was able to observe more small details than you were however. That's what made you such a great team and could solve cases quickly and efficiently.

"I'm not sure, Y/N. But nearly taking the car off its axle is not going to help." You sighed and moved to take another sip of your coffee. "I think you've had enough," Lindir stated, promptly removing the cup from your hands. "Hey!" Lindir smiled at you and shook his head fondly. "You know what you're like when you've had too much coffee, Y/N. I found out the hard way. Remember?" You laughed at the memory.

*flashback*

"A stakeout? On our first real case?" Lindir asked and you nodded. "How else is this going to work? Besides Mr. Oakenshield already gave us permission. And it's not really a stakeout. It's going undercover." Lindir looked skeptical at first, but eventually agreed. The two of you would be on the lookout at Thorin Oakenshield's charity gala in hopes of protecting a priceless jewel that belonged to Thorin's grandfather. There were rumor's that it was going to be stolen.

So, the two of you dressed to the nines and mingled with the crowd. You kept your eyes peeled, waiting for any sign of the supposed thief. After a few hours, nothing had happened and you were stared to not only get discouraged, but also exhausted. It prompted you to drink several cups of coffee just to stay on your feet.

"Anything?" Lindir asked as he came up next to you. You shook your head. "Nothing. Maybe Oakenshield was fed the wrong information." Lindir pondered for a moment. "Maybe, but it would make sense for something to happen tonight. After all, the Arkenstone isn't exactly under heavy guard with everyone being down here."

You continued watching for several more minutes and then...the coffee hit. "Uh...I gotta go." Lindir's brows drew together and you laughed. "Bathroom, Lindir. Too much coffee." Lindir rolled his eyes. "Alright go on." You moved as quickly as you could without drawing attention, cursing yourself the whole way. You should have known better.

It didn't take you long to finish, but while you were washing your hands, you heard a commotion coming from where the guests all were. Just then, your phone buzzed with a text from Lindir. "The thief is here. It's Smaug, one of the guests. He's grabbed the Arkenstone and is heading your way. Five seconds."

You counted down and sure enough, you heard a voice that reminded you of a reptile growing closer. You waited as patiently as you could, channeling your inner Lindir. You knew if you timed it right, you could stop Smaug. You heard his footsteps pass the bathroom door and picked that moment to throw the door open. If you timed it perfectly, you'd either hit him in the face or the back of the head, depending on which way he was moving as he was gloating.

The door hit something solid and you heard the clatter of the jewel hitting the floor. In an instant, Lindir was by your side, helping you restrain Smaug until the police could get there.

*end flashback*

"Y/N?" You shook yourself out of your reverie. "Sorry, what?" Lindir chuckled softly. "Nevermind. I don't think this...Sméagol guy is going to appear tonight. We should head back." You were about to reply in agreement when something caught your eye. "I think you spoke too soon, Lindir." You opened your door with a smile. "Shall we go solve our case?" Lindir beamed and followed your lead.
