Super short Fred x Reader for World Kindness Day!

(Unedited).

You're a junior in high school. You've just finished your test that you had to make-up. You're pretty pleased with your grade. So impressed with it, that you don't even realize what's going on in the hallway until you're halfway down it.

"Hey, guys, just knock it off," a kid says. You focus on the kid's face. He looks familiar, but it's difficult to place a name to the face. The football players are shoving him back a forth. The kid is obviously a nerd. A couple of the jocks surround him laugh and yank the sign out of his hands. They toss it away. It slides to your feet.

"Sorry, nerd," one of them says.

This makes you fill with anger. You feel so bad for the kid and you know that you have to stand up for him. You pick up the sign and swallow your fear. "Hey, stop!"

One of them snickers. "Who's this?" he asks the kid, "Your girlfriend?"

"How could he get a girlfriend?"

"Well, look at her. It's not that big of an accomplishment," another says. They all laugh loudly.

"Knock if off," the kid mutters shyly. You purse your lips in annoyance.

They laugh again. "Come on," you say, grabbing his arm. You hand him the bent sign and lead him down the hallway. As soon as you head down towards the cafeteria, you decide it's safe to say something. You don't look at him when you talk, "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," he replies. "Um, w-why did you help me?"

"Because you needed it," you reply simply. "And it was the right thing to do. That's why. I can't stand it when people think that they can treat someone poorly just because they're different. It's not right." You look up at him and smile. The fear in his icy blue eyes melts away with warmth. "If you're okay, I think I'm going to go." You step away. His hand reaches out for you.

"Wait, wait," he pleads. You turn around and look back at him. "Can I at least know your name?"

"It's ___," you reply.

He grins. "I'm Fred."

"Oh, you were in my creative writing class during freshman year," you realize. "I really loved your writing assignment on Romeo and Juliet. It was beyond amazing."

"Thanks," he says. "Yeah, English is kind of my favorite subject."

You nod. "Mine, too." You look down. "Why were those guys doing that to you?"

He looks away. "I tried out for the mascot position. I know that it's probably the lamest thing to ever do, but-"

"No, no! That's not lame. It's cool," you assure him. "You shouldn't care about what people think about you, Fred. Just do whatever makes you happy. You know?"

"Yeah," he breathes, "you're brilliant!"

"I-I am?"

"Yeah!" He pulls you into a quick hug. You freeze in surprise at this. "Thanks, ___!" He runs down the hallway quickly.

"You're welcome," you say. He slams to a halt and turns back.

"Wait," he says, "can I have your number?"

"My number," you say slowly. He nods quickly. "O-Okay." You grab a pen out of your bag and a piece of paper from your binder. You scribble your number down and hand it to him. "Here."

"Thanks! I'll text you!" he exclaims.

You blink in confusion. This once quiet and reserved Fred is now loud and uncaring. From that day on, he broke out of his shell more and more. You're surprised and happy to see that he doesn't care what people think of him; he's fine the way he is. Fred soon becomes one of your closest friends, and you're pleased to see that he's not picked on anymore. Your kindness brought Fred out of his shell, and it turn, you made a new friend.
