Day 213
Monday 27th March 2017 19:24I've spent most of the day laid on my sofa, in my chalet, feeling really ill. Who'd have thought that eating one chunk of a manky toenail would have such an effect on me.
Today was the day that Millie left us. She came to see me before she said her final goodbye. She had a fully loaded backpack and was all kitted out ready to leave. "It's weird that you're not well," she said, "Esther and Tina aren't well either." "Hmmm," I said, knowing why but saying nothing, "Funny that. There must be something going around." I told Millie that I felt bad for just letting her go off into the wilderness alone. "Letting me?" questioned Millie with a smile on her face, "Are you going to stop me?" "You know what I mean," I said, "It's really dangerous out there, are you sure about this?" "Yes, I'm sure," said Millie, "My mind's made up. I told you yesterday I can look after myself, anyway, I'll be back in a few days." "What if you don't find Mike?" I asked. "Well I'll do the best I can," said Millie, "But if I can't find him I'll make my way back here alone." I noticed that Millie didn't have any weapons on her and asked when she was going to be given them back. "When I'm on the other side of the wall," she said, "I don't think they like the idea of handing my weapons back over to me when I'm still inside." This made me think about what Benjamin said yesterday just before I started eating his toenails. "Promise me you'll be careful," I said, "Benjamin said something to me yesterday and the more I think about it, the more I feel a bit freaked out." "Why, what did he say?" asked Millie. "Well he implied that Dump and his men might have found Mike, killed him and then left his body near the fishing lake?" "Oh he's an idiot," said Millie, "Why the hell would they do that? If they wanted to kill him why didn't they finish him off when they found him outside the walls?" "Probably because they don't want the residents knowing that Mike got out and that the walls aren't as effective as they're saying." "Are you saying that Mike could actually be dead?" asked Millie, "Are you saying that maybe they did find him, then kill him and plonked his body near the fishing lake?" "Well now I'm thinking about it, I suppose it's possible," I said, "If Dump's men found him outside I bet there'd have been a massive fight. You know what Mike's temper is like when he gets going." "It doesn't make sense," said Millie. "Of course it does," I said, "They couldn't have just killed Mike outside the walls and left him out there, dead. Everyone in here would eventually find out he was missing, leaving them to realise that he must have got over the wall." "So there's two possibilities here," said Millie, "A, Mike's not dead and he's out there somewhere while Dump and his men are hoping he doesn't come back here or B, he is dead and that me going out to look for him is a waste of time." There was an uncertain silence. "It's your choice," I said to Millie, "You don't have to leave." Millie adopted a contemplative look. "F*ck it," she said, "It's worth a risk. This place is a lie and that Dump bloke is a w*nker. If I go out there and find Mike we'll blow the lid on this joint." "Yes," I said, "But if the other theory is right and Dump and his men did find Mike outside the walls, kill him and bring him back here, that leaves you in a very dangerous position, potentially without any weapons." Millie did look slightly worried but at the same time focused and determined. "I'll give it a few days," said Millie, "If haven't found him by then I'll come back."
Clutching my stomach and looking like death, I stood up and gave Millie a hug. "No need for all that," she said, "We hardly know each other. Anyway I'll be OK. I'll probably see you in a few days, remember?" Millie told me to look after myself and not take too much sh*t off Benjamin. She said she had some other goodbyes to make and that as I looked death, I should drink water and rest. Millie left and I was left hoping she'd be OK outside and wondering more about our conversation. If I find out that Dump and his men have killed Mike, just so they can maintain the illusion that the walls are impenetrable, I won't want to stay here. I'd rather find some abandoned house somewhere and take my chances outside. However, if that's not the case, it means they've lied about finding Mike's body and they arranged a funeral for a man who isn't dead, again, to maintain the illusion that the walls are impenetrable. Anyway, extreme lengths to go to pretend that the walls around Dumpville are more effective than they make out. All very corrupt and suspicious. Now that Millie's gone, the only people I have to talk to about all this are TJ and Benjamin, and one of them is too busy blackmailing me and the other is too busy avoiding fatherhood and flirting with Dump's braindead bimbo wife.
One good thing about being ill is that Benjamin hasn't come looking for me today, to make me wash his pants and or lance his verrucas. I also haven't had to put up with Esther's bureaucracy or Auntie Meryl's complaints. Maybe I should make a habit of eating manky toenails. Every cloud and all that.
