Day 286
Thursday 8th June 2017 21:56

An intense day with some rather intense but at the same time impressive confrontations.

We all woke up to one of Dump's usual announcements over the Tannoy system. He said that due to recent events, only armed Army personnel will be permitted to leave Dumpville until further notice. He said procedures were currently under review and that we would all be informed of any changes and updates in due course.

Dump's announcement made everyone feel angry. I was sat with Trudy and some of the others in one of the cafes when he announced it. There was a loud expression of frustration from across Dumpville. "He's just been voted in as leader after he promised to let people come and go as they wanted," snapped Trudy, "And now he's gone back on his promise. Typical politician." "We need to be out there looking for food," said DeShawn, "Dump's more interested in looking like he's in charge than doing what's best for us." "God he's such a tosser," said Dump. Seth and Naomi then appeared. "Who's a tosser?" asked Naomi, "Dump?" "Yeah," said Trudy, "Did you hear what he just? No one's allowed out." Seth gave a slight giggle. "What's funny?" I asked. "Well," says Seth, "You're complaining, but you're making it easy for Dump. To me it looks like he's used to telling you what to do and he's used to you doing it. This place isn't a prison. He can't keep you in here if you don't want to be here. There aren't any rules anymore. What's he going to do if you go over the wall? Shoot you? Funny way of keeping you safe." "But we can't just go over the wall!" exclaimed Mia. "Of course you can," said Seth, "I've seen the maintenance hut. There's loads of tall ladders in there. Just get one and go over the wall if you want to. Mind you, you need to be good with a weapon and quick on your feet to stay alive out there." "We all need to stay together!" insisted Lindon. "Oh God, will you shut up you bl**y freak!" snapped Trudy, "Maybe some of us don't want to stay together." "Dump is not going to just stand by and let us go over the wall," said DeShawn. "He can't stop you," said Seth. "Yeah but he might not let us back in if we go out," said Troy. "Of course he will," said Seth, "He won't want people seeing him telling people in need that they can't come in." "He's clever," I said, "He'll make sure he isn't seen." "Well we can place the ladder up against the Main gates," said Seth, "Dump won't be able to avoid anything then." There was an uncertain silence as we all looked at each other. "Come on, Seth's right," said Naomi, "we've all been pushed around and bossed about for long enough by that fat dictator. Dump hasn't got the power he thinks he has." "I'll have a chat with the lovely Mr Dump and let him know what we're going to do," said Seth, " He won't be happy but there's nothing he can do about it." "I think we should just get out of here and start making our way to the underground city," said DeShawn. I looked at Seth and raised my eyebrows signalling that he needed to explain he wasn't going to take us to City One. There was a short silence. "What's up?" asked DeShawn. "Well I've been thinking about this," said Seth, "And I think we've got a better chance of surviving if we stay here." "YOU F*CKING WHAT?!" Trudy shouted. "Are you suggesting we should stay here?" asked a calm but firm DeShawn. "I am," said Seth. DeShawn suddenly looked very p*ssed off and Trudy went off on one, reminding us she was pregnant and shouting that this place was a joke and Dump is an a*sehole. "And what about everything you said?" DeShawn asked Seth, "The best chance of a future, sustainable life, a possible cure and all that. Are we meant to just forget all that?" "We've got a better chance of surviving in here than we have out there," said Seth, "Yes there might be a cure, yes there might be a good chance of a long term future at City One but is it a chance you want to take? For all I know we might not be able to get into City One, the whole place might be abandoned or they could have had unforeseen troubles. If I turn up with dozens of people they might not even let me in. Then of course there's the miles of road between us and London, filled with hundreds of thousands of infected and that's before we even start talking about the threat from people who aren't infected. I think we should stay here." "I'm not f*cking staying here!" Trudy loudly snapped. "Look, Judy," said Seth. "It's Trudy, you pr*ck," she bluntly said, "You might have two names but I've only got one." "I'm sorry," said Seth, "Trudy. You are going to give birth shortly. Your best chance of having a healthy baby and giving him or her a good future is right here. The walls are strong, we have access to weapons, vehicles and a doctor." "But the food's running out!" Trudy loudly exclaimed, "And Dump runs this place like a right dictator. He shouldn't be called Ronald. He should be called Adolf." Mia looked confused. "What's Santa's reindeer got to do with anything?" she asked. "No," I said, "He was an angry German dictator. He used to see red all the time." "Well that'll be his bright red nose used to guide Santa's sleigh," said Mia. "Look," said Seth, "I know things aren't perfect here but we can go out and find more food and fuel, and we can deal with Dump. Once those issues are sorted we've got a pretty good set up here, and I think dealing with those issues is easier than dealing with what's behind those walls. I'd rather travel a few miles out in search of food and supplies than travel hundreds of miles to a place that might not even be there anymore." There was a lingering moment of silence. We all exchanged uncertain but contemplative looks that showed how Seth had persuaded us to see things from his point of view. "If anyone really wants to leave," said Seth, "I'll draw you a map and give you directions to City One but I'm definitely staying here." Trudy stood up and stormed off. She was not happy. "So we're all staying together?" asked Lindon. "Well it looks like it," I said with a defeated and blunt tone. I don't know how I feel about this. After listening to Seth I suppose it is safer and it does make sense to stay here but the Idea of seeing an amazing underground city and discovering a cure is very temping. For now, I'm staying putt with everyone else.
