Day 307
Thursday 29th June 2017 20:49A stressful, terrifying and exhausting day.
When I woke up this morning I stood on top of the large hill and overlooked what was once the beautiful city of Paris. The landscape was littered with burnt out buildings, discarded handbags and abandoned vehicles. The greenery was neglected and overgrown, and the streets were full of groaning infected, aimless wandering around. The Eiffel Tower stood tall and now out of place amongst the desolation. This is the first time I've ever been to Paris. Very sad.
Sarah, Lauren and I went out looking for Hilary today. Sarah and I argued about how far out we should go from the camper van. I didn't want to stray too far in case we got cornered by a load of infected, particularly the big herd that stopped Sarah and Lauren from getting to me. "What's up with you?" snapped Sarah, "Do you want to get back to England or not?" "Of course I do," I firmly said, "I just don't want to get killed in the process." "God, will you two please just stop arguing," said a tired and frustrated Lauren, "You're both doing my head in." Lauren looked at Sarah. "We've survived this long by not venturing too far from the camper van so I don't think we should go TOO far, but. . ." Lauren then turned and looked at me. ". . . We need to go out a bit further than usual because we haven't explored that far and that's where this Hilary person might be."
Lauren armed herself with a baseball bat, and Sarah and I each had a large kitchen knife. The three of us slowly and cautiously ventured into the woods. We searched the areas around the camper van, the spooky cabin and helicopter crash site. We didn't come across any infected but we could hear their hellish screeches and eerie moans around us and in the distance so we remained on guard.
When we arrived at the helicopter crash site we looked to see if we could find any footprints. Sadly we couldn't. Sarah fired loads of questions at me; did Hilary have any weapons? Did he have any diesel on him? Did he have any food? "How the Hell do I know?" I said, "I was knocked out remember?" "Well you know this Hilary bloke," said Sarah, "Think like him. Put yourself in his shoes. What would he do?" "Probably look for some women to rape," I flippantly said. I started to think about what Sarah said and I thought about what Hilary might do. "Hang on," I said, "Now I think about it, I suppose he'd look for food, water and a place to stay. As soon as the helicopter crashed he'd have heard the infected approaching and run for cover. I can understand him abandoning me but why didn't he run to the cabin?" "Maybe he got scared and just ran in the first direction he could," said Lauren. "Yes but he'd have found you guys in the camper van eventually," I said, "He wouldn't run for shelter further away if there's good enough shelter nearby. No one would. It's actually really weird now I think about it. It doesn't make any sense. It's like he's hiding from us." "Maybe he was thrown from the helicopter?" said Lauren, "I suppose he could even be dead." "Good," I said, "I hope the f*cker is dead after all the sh*t he's put me and my mates through. If he is dead, it begs the question, why are we bothering to look for him?" "Because he might not be dead," said Sarah, "He could be around here somewhere." "If he WAS around here he'd have come looking for me by now," I said, "He's p*ssed off with me and out for revenge. If he's still alive and around here somewhere he'll know that I'd go to the nearest safe place. So why isn't he looking for me?" "Maybe he is," said Lauren. "Well if he is, he'd have found me by now," I said, "We're looking for him. Why isn't he looking for me? It doesn't make any sense." "Well we're not going to find anyone looking here are we?" said Sarah.
We carried on searching the area for Hilary. "Let's try down here," said Lauren, pointing down the hill away from the woods. "Hang on," I said, "That's too far away from the woods. It's closer to the centre of Paris." "What were you, a geography teacher?" asked a snappy Sarah, "We know where we're going." "Well we need to talk about this," I said, "We can't just walk down into the crowded streets. We need a plan." "We don't know that the streets will be crowded," said Sarah. "Of course they'll be crowded," I said, pointing towards the city, "You can hear them moaning from here." "We can stay close to the woods," said Lauren, "If we get into trouble we're close enough that we can just run back to the campervan." "This is silly," I said, "If Hilary is still alive he's probably injured from the crash. He won't have run towards the city, he'll have run into the woods. Are you sure you've searched the entire area?" "Yes," snapped Sarah, "We've told you, now let's look down here." All of a sudden a loud growl was heard very close. "Oh great," I sarcastically said to Sarah, "You and your big mouth." "Me?!" exclaimed Sarah, "You're the one that's p*ssing about."
