Day 273
Friday 26th May 2017 23:42What a day! A covert operation ended up being executed, resulting in me currently nursing a red face and trying to get my heart rate back to normal.
In the afternoon I was walking down Main Street when I saw Sergeant Reed. He was hobbling around on crutches. "Good to see you up and about," I said, "What's wrong with the leg?" "Bit of a sprain," said Reed, "I'll be fine in a few days." "So what happened out there?" I asked, "Did you see anyone else?" "Only the dead," said Reed, "I'm telling you Luke, it's like a f*cking jungle out there. I'm surprised I'm still alive. Something's going on out there. It's like something's stirring those things up. I've been on dozens of runs and I've never seen so many of them all in one place. I'm surprised you and your lot managed to make your way through all that to get here. It's carnage out there, and no offence but you're a weedy little runt aren't you? I'm surprised you weren't ripped apart weeks ago." Nice. "Well," I said, "I suppose when your loved ones have died and you're surrounded by infected, even weedy little runts like me have the potential to display strong survival skills." "I suppose," said Reed. "I'm sorry about your colleagues; the other sergeants," I said. "I don't want to talk about it," said Reed, "I've seen some sights since this thing started but the way they died; it was brutal." "Who's the guy you brought back with you?" I asked. "A Doctor," said Reed with a smile. "You're kidding?!" I replied gleefully, "That's great news. Where did you find him?" "In a hospital in the next town along," said Reed, "His arm was badly injured so I fixed him up and brought him here." "I can't wait to tell Trudy," I said. "She knows," said Reed, "Dump told her this morning. The Doctor's with her now." "This is great," I said, "Trudy will be over the moon. This guy will be able to help her give birth. Reed, you're amazing." "I don't feel too amazing," he said, "I'm hobbling around like an old man, I'm the only sergeant left and we're running dangerously low on food." "I know," I said with a glum tone. "And what's all this sh*t about an election?" asked Reed, "I've heard you're in the running. No offence but you don't seem like a natural leader to me." "Dump's p*ssing people off, Reed," I said, "A lot of people. Don't you think he's got some really. . . inappropriate attitudes?" "Come on, Luke," said Reed, "He's a man's man, an MP. Haven't you ever met an MP who had some dodgy opinions on stuff? Anyway I'm surprised you want the stress of having to run this place." "Well I think I could do a better job than him," I said. Reed raised his eyebrows, which seemed to suggest he thought I was out of my depth. "Well, I'm going to go rest this leg and speak to my men about the pile of infected dead bodies outside. Someone's go to think of clearing them up." As Reed started to limp off, I called to him. "Oh, I forgot to ask; where's Debra?" "Sorry, Luke," said Reed, as he continued to hobble off, "You need to speak to Dump."
I haven't seen anything of Debra all day and Reed's answer made me feel a bit suspicious. I'm starting to wonder if Dump's trying to keep her away from us. I was talking with Naomi and DeShawn about it earlier. "How does he know about you and Esther?" said Naomi. I immediately adopted a guilty expression. I thought Naomi had figured out Esther and I were still having sex. "Eh?!" I exclaimed, "Me and Esther?! What are you talking about?" "What he said on the stage yesterday," said Naomi looking confused, "What else would I be talking about?" "You don't think he knows about me dressing up in women's clothes do you?" asked DeShawn. "I don't know," said Naomi, "But if he knows private stuff about Esther and Luke, what does he know about the rest of us? Does he know Amelia isn't my biological daughter?" "Does he know TJ and I sent Mike away?" I said. "I don't have a good feeling," said Naomi, "I haven't seen Debra since she got back." "Me neither," said DeShawn. "I reckon he wants her separated from us," I said, "I saw Reed this morning. He told me if I wanted to know where Debra was I should ask Dump. I would, if he wasn't keeping such a low profile. She's probably stuck with Roger." "Well in that case," said Naomi, "I know where that is." "How do you know where Roger is?" asked DeShawn. Naomi looked at me guiltily. "It doesn't matter," she said, "I just know. If we're clever we could get to Debra." "And then what?" I asked, "We break her out? How's that going to go down?" "We need time with her alone," said Naomi, "I don't think she abused her own son like Dump said. I reckon he's lying to cover his own fat orange a*se. That's why he's keeping Debra from coming anywhere near us. Listen. I'll find Debra and you distract the soldier outside." "Me?!" I exclaimed, "Why me?! I'm hardly James Bond. I'm more like James bl**dy May. He can't keep her in there for too much longer. Everyone'll start asking questions." "Are you saying you're not going to help me?" asked Naomi. "For God's sake Naomi," I said, "You've got a little girl to look after, do you really want to keep getting involved in all this?" Naomi looked angry. "Jesus, Luke," she said, "Dump's been acting like this is his own personal little empire for too long and there's a woman around here somewhere who's been accused of doing something I don't think she did. We've got to do something." "Don't fall out about this guys," said DeShawn, "I've got an idea. Anyway, Luke's in the election. If we really want him to be our leader, he needs to stay out of trouble." "OK," said Naomi, "I suppose, but if Dump's using dirt he's got on us, we need to find dirt to use on him." "There's the list we found," I said. "I don't think we should use that," said Naomi, "I agree there's something dodgy about it but it doesn't prove anything." "Well Esther thinks we should find out who's telling Dump all of our secrets," I said. "Look," said DeShawn, "Luke, just go home. Have a think about who could have blabbed to Dump and see what else you can find out. Naomi, meet me outside Triton's when it's dark; about 10pm. If you take me to where you think Debra is I'll make sure you get to see her. If she says Dump's lying about her abusing her son, we can use this information to get him booted out of the leader's chair." "Well what are you going to do?" I asked DeShawn. "I'll tell you after," said DeShawn. I was very curious as to what his plan was but I was also relieved that I wasn't involved. Dump's still in charge and I'm starting to think if we p*ss him off anymore he'll chuck the lot of us out.
