Day 322
Friday 14th July 2017 23:17What a stressful, distressing, emotional and traumatic day.
I woke up in the middle of the night in the cottage to screaming and someone knocking loudly on the front door. "HELP!" some screamed, "LET US IN! PLEASE LET US IN!" The noise woke us all up and we all quickly gathered downstairs by the front door. We all exchanged silent and uncertain looks. "Don't let them in," Dump said firmly, "It could be anyone out there." There was a loud screeching noise. "That's the infected," I said, "They're coming this way." "Well done Captain Obvious," said Dump. "PLEASE!" the voice from outside yelled, "PLEASE LET US IN!" The noise of a crying baby then followed. "That's a baby!" exclaimed Naomi. She quickly stepped forward, unlocked the various locks and flung the door open. A man, a woman holding a baby and a young teenage boy were stood in front of us. "Quick, get in!" yelled Naomi. The new arrivals quickly entered the cottage and we slammed the door shut and locked it. We could hear the infected outside aggressively growling and banging on the door. "Great," Dump sarcastically said, "Now they know we're in here. We should have left them outside." "Shut up," Naomi vented at Dump. "It's OK," said Ian, "If we stay quiet all the infected will eventually wander off." "Yeah and how long do you think that will take?" said Dump. Naomi tended to the new arrivals and asked them if they were OK. "We've been on the road for days," said the woman, "Sorry, I'm Sally, this is my husband Jed and this is our son Josh." Josh looked like a typical moody teenager; floppy hair, pale completion and a look of not being bothered. He also had a black eye. Sally looked stressed and worried as she tried to regain control of her breathing. "We're parked just outside," she said, "We don't have much petrol. We just wanted a bed for the night." "How old's the baby?" asked Naomi. "Just a couple of weeks," said Sally. Naomi looked at Sally with a look of surprise suggesting that perhaps she was too old to have a baby. "Oh she's my granddaughter, not my daughter," said Sally, "Our Josh here's the Dad, but he's not interested." I looked at TJ and raised my eyes. "Yeah," I said, "Awful isn't it when Dads don't give a toss about their kids." TJ gave me a big sarcastic smile and stuck his middle finger up at me. "Where's the Mum?" asked Naomi. "Oh she ran off days ago and left this one with us," said Sally, "Trouble causing little madam. Mind you, it's probably for the best. She was a gobby little cow." Sally turned and looked at Josh. "This silly sod says he's in love with her," she said, "What does he know about love, he's a teenage boy? He's better off without her." "Well she's gorgeous," said Naomi, "What her name?" "Olivia," said Sally. "That's a nice name," said Naomi, "My daughter's called Amelia." "Is she upstairs?" asked Sally. "No, she's somewhere else," said Naomi, "It's a long story." "Excuse me," said Dump, "But when you've all finished your mothers' meeting do you think we could talk about the slightly more pressing matter of dozens of infected trying to batter the front door down?" "They won't get in there," said Ian, "That door's strong and the windows are boarded up solid. We just need to stay quiet." I looked at Sally's husband, Jed who was holding his arm. He looked like he was in pain and struggling to breathe. "Are you OK?" I asked him. "Oh he's fine," said Sally, "He's just not used to all this running around. I don't think any of us are." I became very suspicious. "Why's he clutching his arm?" I cautiously asked, "Let me see." Sally protested but I assertively approached Jed and lifted up the sleeve on his left arm. He'd been bitten. We all gasped and took a step back. "Oh great," said Dump, "Just bring some infected man in here to eat us all why don't you?" "He's not infected!" screamed Sally, "It's just a bite." "That means he IS infected you silly cow!" exclaimed Dump. "How long ago were you bit?" I asked Jed. "About fifteen minutes ago," he said with panic in his voice and sweat running down his face. "You haven't got long," I said. "Kill him," said Dump, "Kill him now." "No!" screamed Sally, "You don't need to kill him. He's fine. Leave him alone!" Sally's cries rattled the infected, who started banging at the door with more aggression. "You all need to be quiet," said Ian. Jed noticed Naomi's knife on the dining table, quickly grabbed it, pointed it in my direction and threatened me with it. "Come anywhere near me and I'll stab you," he said. "You just put that knife down you f*cking dirty little piggy," said Mike, "Or I'll come over there and snap your neck." "It's OK, Mike," I said, "I can handle this. Jed, I'm sorry but you know what this means. We can wait for you to turn if you want but you know how this plays out. You've got a high temperature haven't you? Your heart's beating really fast?" "Well wouldn't your heart be beating fast if some pr*ck you'd only just met said he was going to kill you?" said Jed. "Your vision's getting blurry isn't it?" I said, "Pretty soon you'll get pains all over your body and you'll start shaking uncontrollably. Do you want us to wait for that to happen?" "You're not going to kill me," snapped Jed. "I'm sorry," I said, "It's nothing personal, but we can't do anything to help you." I reached for one of the guns when Jed gave a loud roar and started to launch at me, preparing to stab me with the knife. All of a sudden – THUD. Jed's eyes rolled to the back of his head and he fell to the floor unconscious. We looked up to see Josh holding one of the large, heavy table lamps in his hand. He had an emotionless look on his face. He then casually picked up the knife Jed had just dropped on the floor and quickly plunged the blade into the side of Jed's head. Sally let out a loud scream and still holding baby Olivia, she stormed up to Josh and slapped him hard across the face. Josh just stood there and took the whack, appearing unaffected. He looked at his sobbing and bereaved mother for a moment, turned round and then slowly walked into the kitchen. Sally looked angry and was about to go after Josh when Naomi stopped her. "No don't," she said, "Just give him some space. Let's get you settled. You need to concentrate on the baby." As Naomi escorted Sally over to the sofa she looked at me and TJ and raised her eyebrows and nodded towards the kitchen. She was signalling that we should go talk to Josh. I gave Naomi a look of confusion, pointed at me and TJ and looked dismayed. I was trying to communicate that her suggestion of me and TJ, two grown men with little experience of talking to stroppy teenage boys was not the best idea but it didn't look like we had much of a choice.
