Nini had been staring at the invitation in her hands for fifteen minutes. tears slowly streamed down her face and onto the hardwood floor below her.

you are cordially invited to the wedding ceremony of:
Richard Michael Bowen & Lauren Elise O'brien
Saturday the 22nd
2:00pm
reception to follow at 4:30pm

Nini quickly wiped her tears. she didn't want to believe that he was getting married; to another girl non the less. she always thought they'd get their happily ever after.

they'd dated through their last two years of high school and all through college before calling it quits after Nini moved to New York City. she always thought they'd find their way back to each other. she thought they were soulmates.

it had been six years since they broke up and Nini hadn't had a meaningful relationship since. sure she "dated" here and there but nobody compared to Ricky. she always hoped he'd wait for her too.

she shoved the invitation into a drawer in her kitchen, not wanting to see it anymore. she didn't want to be reminded that he was getting the happy ever after that Nini had wanted.

she didn't think about it until a few weeks later when her mom called her to ask when she was coming home for the wedding.

"what're you talking about?" Nini said, her phone held between her ear and her shoulder as she dug around for her script.

"Ricky's wedding honey. when are you flying back to SLC?" Carols voice came through the phone.

Nini hesitated, Carol speaking again, "honey, i know you don't want to see him but he's your best friend. you should be here to support him."

"was my best friend mom," she reminded Carol, "besides, i don't really want to see the love of my life marry another woman who isn't me."

"well then, maybe you'll just have to stop the wedding." Carol said in all seriousness.

Nini just about dropped the phone, "mom, that's crazy. what are you talking about?"

Nini could hear Carol chuckle, "Nina, tell him how you feel before it's too late. i love you honey." and with that, Carol hung up the phone.

Nini ignored her mother's idea but, she still found herself booking a flight to Salt Lake City later that night.

she didn't tell anybody she was home. she wasn't even sure what she was doing. she wasn't really going to stop his wedding...right?

yet Nini found herself standing in front of her mirror in her childhood bedroom, the bedroom where she and Ricky had spent so much time in their relationship, wearing a brand new blue floral dress and nude heels. she played with her hair as she thought about what she was going to do. her moms had already left to head to the church.

Nini couldn't help but laughter at the whole situation. when she and Ricky were still together, they spoke about getting married often, Ricky clearly stating every time that he didn't want a church wedding, he wasn't even sure he wanted a real wedding. he often told Nini he'd much rather elope.

she drove herself to the church in Salt Lake, her heart pounding the whole time. she didn't think this through. she couldn't ruin his relationship.
