Nini sighs as she rubs her face, the sound of the apartment door slamming reverberating in her ears. tears trickle down her cheeks knowing that things aren't going to get better.
it was supposed to be an easy night, they were gonna have dinner and watch a movie. Nini made dinner and set the table, waiting for hours for her long time boyfriend. when he finally came home, he was moody and just wanted to go to bed. she picked a fight, like usual, ending in them screaming at each other before he abruptly left.
it's been this way for almost six months. they go to work and come home and go to bed, Nini in their room and Ricky on the couch. they barely speak unless they're screaming at each other. they haven't been intimate in almost a year, not even holding hands or kissing.
honestly, they knew it was coming for a long time. they'd been together for ten years, they thought they'd spend the rest of their lives together. now Nini is thinking of ways to rebuild her life the moment they finally separate.
it's hours later when Ricky finally returns, sighing as he closes the door and locks it behind him. he can see his girlfriends head leaning on the couch, knowing she was waiting for him.
he slowly approaches the couch, sitting at the farthest spot from her. she's still awake, just silent. it's a few minutes before either one of them speaks.
"i-i think i'm done Ricky."
the curly haired man drops his head, sighing, "i think we both are."
they both take a deep breath, "so that's it? ten years is just over?" he asks quietly.
Nini smiles sadly, "we haven't been happy in a long time Ricky. i can't remember the last time we had a conversation where we didn't argue."
he nods, dropping his head again, "i do love you Nini, i always have and i always will."
"i love you too Ricky but, we've been together so long i just think it's time to call it quits. it's obvious that we don't like spending time with each other anymore."
they're quiet again, Ricky picking at a loose thread on the couch, Nini looking around the room.
Ricky gets up, shoving his hands into his pockets, "i uh, i think i'm gonna go stay at my dads for a couple days."
"Ricky-"
he puts his hand out to stop her, "no, it's okay. i don't want to make you uncomfortable."
"but this is your apartment, i should be the one leaving." she pleads, not understanding why he's leaving.
the curly haired man shakes his head, sighing, "it's our apartment, it's fine Nini. i'm just gonna go stay with him for a few days until we can figure out which one of us is moving out."
she nods and sinks back into her seat, pulling her knees up to her chest while he disappears into their bedroom, coming back ten minutes later with a full duffle bag.
he twists his key ring around his finger, not knowing what to say to the girl he just broke up with, "i'll uh, see you later, i guess?"
Nini shrugs as she looks at him, "i'll be here."
he nods and hesitates before moving to the door, looking back at her to see her staring off at the wall. taking a deep breath, he steps out into the hallway, closing the door behind him.
she doesn't let her tears fall until she knows for sure that he's gone. sobs wrack her body as she hugs her knees. looking around the room, it's covered in old photos of the two of them on trips and her heart breaks a little knowing that they haven't done anything like that in a long time.
