It was a year since the death of your brother, Tadashi. You, Cass, and Hiro visited the memorial of your friend and brother. You squat down on the dirt. You reach out and touch the headstone. "Hey, big bro. Hiro and I brought you something." Hiro starts to dig in the grass just a few feet from the headstone. You plant the small cherry blossom tree that's just a little over eight inches tall. Tadashi's memorial that Cass placed was on it's own property, so you and Hiro could decorate the site as you pleased. "I know you're watching us," You say to the bright blue sky.
"We miss you, Tadashi," Hiro says. You hear Cass sniffle.
"Very much," You add. "But we're okay. Hiro's okay. I'm okay."
~Flashback~
It was just after your parents passed away. Tadashi was always sad, sitting by the window.
"'Dashi," You said one day. "What're ya doin'?"
He shrugs.
You looked over at your little brother, Hiro, who was just a year and a half younger. He walked over, his worried eyes on your big brother.
"'Dashi? What's wrong?" Hiro asked.
"Nothing, Hiro." He wiped a tear. He refused to face you or Hiro.
"Are you waitin' for Momma and Daddy?" He asked.
"No, Hiro. They're gone."
"Where'd they go?" You asked.
Tadashi ignored you.
"'Dashi!"
Silence.
Hiro wailed. "I want Momma and Daddy!"
"Well too bad, Hiro!" Tadashi shouted. It's the angriest you'd ever seen him. "They're gone. They're not coming back. We're staying with Aunt Cass, now."
Hiro continued to cry. You comforted him. You hugged him.
Later that night, you crept to Tadashi's bed. "'Dashi?"
He set down the book he was reading. "What's wrong?"
"Are Momma and Daddy. . . in heaven?"
Tears filled Tadashi's eyes. "Yeah."
"Oh." You wiped away a tear of your own.
Tadashi got down on the floor in front of you. He touched your shoulder. "Don't you worry, ___. I'm gonna be the best big brother ever. I'm gonna watch over you and Hiro for a long while."
"Promise not to leave us?"
"Promise," He stated.
"Okay. And I promise that Hiro'll be okay."
"And you'll be okay?"
"I'm okay."
~
"Alright, kiddos," Cass says. She touches your shoulder and Hiro's. "It looks beautiful. Now let's go feed those hungry brains, huh?"
You stand and walk towards the car. Hiro holds on to your arm. He blinks tears away. You do the same, looking back to the memorial.
I'm okay. Promise.
