We drove for about ten minutes before I saw anything promising.
I broke the silence that lingered in the rover, "Bellamy, right here." When he stopped the rover, all of us got out to check if we'd be able to cross. The river here was really shallow, I could see the stones under the water.
"This will work," Roan agreed. Bellamy nodded to me and brought the radio up to his mouth.
"Clarke, come in. We found a crossing," Bellamy updated, but he got no response. "Cargo one, do you read me?"
Still he got no response from Clarke. I began to worry, "something's wrong."
Bellamy rushed over to me and helped me get back into the back of the rover. I saw Roan already got back in once I was. Bellamy shut the back door and hurried to get into the driver's seat. He sped to back to the spot they were supposed to be in, but when we got there we saw no sign of people or the truck.
I grabbed a knife from the belt that was previously returned to me and jumped out of the car along with Bellamy and Roan.
"Stay sharp," Bellamy told us. They both had weapons out too as we looked around. "Cargo one, come in. Where the hell are you?"
"Over here!" Roan announced as he ran towards the river. I saw what got his attention, there was a body covered in fabric floating at the shore. Bellamy rushed over to help Roan heave the body out onto the sandy dirt.
As I got to them, Bellamy had already opened the fabric up to see who it was. I recognized his face, he was in the cargo truck and part of the Azgeda soldiers that came with us.
"Seiku," Roan stated the fallen warrior's name. "We all know who did this."
"Trikru," Bellamy said. "Where the fuck are the rest of our people?"
"They took the truck to Polis. That means at least one of yours is still alive," Roan pointed out. No other exchange of words were needed, all of us got right back into the rover and took off.
"If we don't get to them before they get to Polis, they'll use the fuel to make bombs," Bellamy stressed.
"They'll kill everyone if they do that," Roan said.
"I think you mean they'll kill Ice Nation," Bellamy corrected. I was so worried about where that truck was that I couldn't care to involve myself in their conversation.
"All you two care about is your own people," Roan now had my attention. "You and Death's Shadow."
I tensed when he said the nickname I was apparently given. Bellamy replied, "like you're any better?"
"It's what everyone would care about," Roan said. I still stayed silent, I didn't want to talk about that village. The memory of me killing five men ate at me constantly.
Unfortunately, I didn't get the privilege of not talking about it. Bellamy moved his eyes off the road and onto Roan, "Death's Shadow?" I never had the chance to tell him that Roan knew of what I had done.
"Hm, she didn't tell you," Roan caught on.
"Kota, what is he talking about?" Bellamy figured this was about me. I caught his eyes in the rearview mirror, they were filled with more panic than earlier.
Before I could speak, Roan did, "she slaughtered a village and my soldiers. Of course I'd find out who did it."
"She didn't kill the village," Bellamy spat, defending me. I couldn't even find the opportunity to get a word in, having two powerful men arguing in a small space made that hard. That was until Roan turned to glare at me when Bellamy told him the truth. He wanted me to explain.
