I was watching the monitor to see if Echo got her job finished yet. Monty couldn't disable the eye from here, he needed an inside man. Octavia told Echo to spy for her, pretend to be a defector and Octavia would lift her banishment. It's almost been half a day and the eye in the sky was still active. I turned to the sound of the door opening to see Bellamy entering.
"Anything?" He asked as he walked to stand beside me.
"Not yet. She will get it done," I sighed.
"I'll take over. You should get some sleep," Bellamy told me.
I was tired, but too on edge to even think about sleeping. "After I check on Monty," I said as I stood up from my seat. I saw that Bear was sleeping on the floor and asked Bellamy to keep an eye on him.
I left the room and made my way over to the hydrofarm, my feeling of Monty being in here was right. He turned to look at me when I entered.
"I miss the algae farm," he said softly. "I thought being around all this might help."
I looked at all the dying plants surrounding us, "does it help?"
Monty shook his head no, "most of the crops are fallow. I give it three weeks until this place is as dead as the wasteland."
I was about to say something back to him, but the door opened. Clarke slowly stepped in with an envelope in her hand, she looked like she wasn't expecting to see me there.
"I can come back," she offered.
Monty looked at me and then back to Clarke, "no, it's okay." Monty and I have grown so much closer on the Ring, we were safe people to each other. On the Ring, Monty helped me overcome my struggling. He would sit down with me for hours as we talked about plants, dirt, water, you name it. It made me feel connected to my mom in a way since we were both so mesmerized by nature and constantly talked about it. I would forever feel indebted to Monty for bringing that piece of my mom and myself back to life.
Clarke stepped further in to stand in front of us, "I've been meaning to give this to you."
She handed Monty the envelope, it had his name written on it. The letters looked funky, but also neat. I knew exactly who's handwriting that was.
"Jasper's handwriting," Monty said as he looked at it.
"I found it at the Ark, after the radiation wave. I almost read it a few times, but now I'm glad I didn't," Clarke spoke. I could see the pain in Monty's expression, he had a hard time coping over Jasper's death. They were each other's best friends, like Octavia and I were. But now Jasper was dead, and Octavia became dead inside.
All of our attention was taken to the door, people were coming in. I heard Cooper's voice and grabbed Monty and Clarke's arms to drag them out of sight. We watched in silence as Cooper wheeled in a body, she rolled the still man into a separate room that was in here. A few seconds later she left the hydrofarm all together, locking the door to the room she brought the person into.
All three of us walked over to the door, Monty tested the handle to see if it really was locked.
"We need to see what's going on in there," I had a bad feeling about this. I saw Monty looking around, he spotted a pair of shears and picked them up.
"You can't pick a lock with those," Clarke was confused as to what he was doing.
Monty ignored her and wedged a piece of metal off of whatever was next to the door. "Ye a little faith," Monty told her. "The keypad energizes the solenoid, pulls the coil and pin back. A magnet can so the same thing."
He held the magnet up to the door and moved in a way to get the door unlocked. He pushed the handle down and the door opened with ease.
"You're so cool sometimes," I said to him as he opened the door all the way. We all stepped into the room and were met with seeing a biocontainment lab.
"What the hell is this for?" Monty asked.
"Let's find out," I answered as I unzipped one of the plastic enclosures. I stepped in carefully as Monty and Clarke followed me in.
"I don't like this," Monty voiced. Neither did I, my fingers were tingling from my nerves. I lifted the sheet back that was draped over a large capsule.
"Oh my god," Clarke was appalled at the sight. So was I, my breathing picked up from what I was seeing. There was a women laying in the capsule, she was completely pale and her eyes held no life. Worms were pouring out of her bloodied abdomen, squirming every which way.
"You said no one else was bitten," Monty relayed the information Clarke told him.
"No. They weren't. I don't-" Clarke was still shocked at what was in front of us.
I thought about the worm we took out of Octavia's arm, they must have used that one to make more. "They're breeding them..." I said, stunned.
Clarke started to the other capsule that was covered, when she ripped the sheet off I was horrified. The man laying in there was still alive, but asleep. His body was strapped down as the skin on his stomach continuously bulged.
"The cold must slow them down," Monty pointed to a small monitor. "If Octavia can deliver these worms in a defector-"
Monty was cut off from the man groaning. He was grappling under his restraints and started to choke. Seconds later, blood and worms spilled out of his mouth. I turned around and stormed out of the room, I could not watch that.
"Kota, where are you going?" Clarke asked as she followed behind me.
"To find Bellamy," I answered without stopping my pace.
"Harper should be watching for the eye now. Bellamy is probably in the dining hall," Monty stressed from behind me.
When we made it to the dining hall, I scanned the room quickly. I spotted Bear almost instantly, he was sitting next to Bellamy at a table. I began my way over to him and sat down in the seat across from him. I must've had worry written all over my face because he asked me what was going on right away. Clarke and Monty filled the two remaining seats.
I explained in detail what we had just encountered, I could hear a slight shake in my voice.
"Octavia wouldn't condone human testing, no matter how crazy it's become down here," Bellamy defended. He believed me, he just didn't want to believe that Octavia was behind this.
"Desperation makes the unimaginable a necessity," Clarke spoke up.
"Still, if she weaponizes those things and sends them into the valley, all the people we love that are there will be dead," Bellamy's tone held panic.
"It won't just be them. It'll be all of us," I stated back to him.
"She's right. Unleashing an invasive species on the last arable land on Earth is a monumentally bad idea," Monty added.
"Even if Octavia does know, she won't listen to me or Kota," Bellamy ran his hand through his hair. "We need help."
Bellamy flicked his head towards another table in the hall, I turned around to see that he was motioning to Indra. She would have more of a chance to get through to Octavia than we would.
I got up from my seat and made my way over to Indra, Bellamy was right next to me. I ordered for the other people at the table to leave, they wouldn't until Indra motioned her head to the side. Clarke joined us too at this point as we filled the now empty seats.
"Indra, would Cooper do something without my sister's permission?" Bellamy got right to the point.
"Only if she got mine first, but since I don't know what the hell you're talking about, it's hard to say," Indra's voice rumbled.
"She's breeding the worms, experimenting on defectors. One of them is still alive," I said quietly, but I was stern.
"Why would she do that?" Indra's eyes were wider than before.
"Our guess... trying to find a way to keep them dormant long enough to deliver them in the next defection," Clarke revealed.
"Good plan," Indra drew in a breath. "Show me."
