"Are you okay?" Bellamy asked me gently as we waited and watched.
I moved my eyes to look up at him and nodded my head quickly. He asked this because of what we learned about Kane's death. In all honesty, I did not want to talk about it right now. I couldn't let the sadness intrude on my mind while we were dealing with this. Thankfully, Bellamy always seemed to understand my thoughts, so he didn't say anymore about it.
I snapped my head back down to the entrance of where Murphy and Gabriel were, the adjuster had come out and started speaking, "we purify Sanctum through fire! Get the fuel! Soak it down!"
"I guess nothing goes according to the plan nowadays," I sighed as we all got up from our spots. We made our way down from our hidden post and approached the adjuster who now held a torch in her hand.
"Leave the torch and back away," Bellamy warned as we got close to her.
When she didn't put the torch back, Octavia spoke to her, "those are your people in there. Help us save them."
"That's what we're doing," she stated simply. "Their sacrifice will be a blessing to us all."
She turned to continue with her plan to burn down the building, but I grabbed her arm to stop her. She instinctually whipped her arm with the torch in it to hit me, I reacted quickly by leaning back so I wouldn't be smacked with it. I brought my foot up and kicked it into the back of her knee, she collapsed to the ground and dropped the torch out of her hand.
Now it was a full on brawl, the other people of Sanctum that were surrounding us started coming at us with everything they had. I ducked as a fist attempted to collide with my face and I landed a punch in the stranger's abdomen.
"Bellamy!" I called out to him as I watched him take someone down. "The torches! Keep them away from the tavern!"
He took in what I said and ran over to grab one of the torches. I was tackled from behind and landed stomach first into the ground. There was someone on my back, so I used all the strength I had to roll my body over. Once I did that, the lady on top of me flew off to the side. I scurried up to my feet and reached my hands to my belt. Emori managed to get these back for me, they took them away while we were being restrained for the adjustments.
Once I had a knife in each hand, I noticed someone running full speed at me with a spear in hand. The knives were there as a last resort, I didn't want to kill anyone. I could still lay punches with them in my hands without cutting open skin.
In this case, I thought it was in my best interest to use my knife. I threw it into the man's hand that was running to me. He yelped as the spear clattered on the gravel and I booked it towards him.
I laid a powerful punch to his temple with my now free hand. Once he hit the ground I quickly collected my bloodied knife. When I turned around, I saw the crazy adjuster bitch dumping gasoline on herself.
She got a hold of a nearby torch and lit herself up, I saw her start to run but that was all I could see. I was hit on the side of my head and fell to the floor, I was too distracted by the woman on fire to see it coming.
I tried to ignore the pain that was already seeping into my brain as I flipped onto my back. The face of my attacker surprised me as he landed a knee on my chest, making me cough out a gasp.
"Nonbelievers must be killed!" He yelled in my face.
"Liam stop! It's me! Kota!" I was able to catch my breath. Liam didn't seem fazed of who he was attacking. I still had a knife in one hand, but I didn't even consider using it on him. I couldn't hurt the man who helped me, let alone kill him. He wasn't in his right mind because of the toxin bomb, there's no way Liam would do this without the effects of the toxin.
