With the moment of safety, I approached Echo. I know this wasn't the best time to ask questions about other people, but I needed to know what happened to Kane. The group that went up to space was back and I didn't see any sign of him with them.
"What happened to Marcus?" I asked quickly. I could see Bellamy was invested in the answer Echo was about to give as well.
When her face dropped at my question, I already knew the answer. "He's dead, I'm sorry," Echo told me gently. I felt my heart plummet into my stomach, I just had to be right all the time. I always had that feeling that he was never going to make it after what happened to him, but that sliver of hope I held onto caused my heart to break at the news.
I shook my head and turned away from Echo and Bellamy's faces. I needed to hold it together right now, it was not the time to mourn yet. The aggression outside was only growing. The hatch on the door seemed to be holding up less and less with every bang.
"How much longer will this last?" Bellamy asked to anyone with an answer.
"It will last longer than these walls will," Echo stated. The walls of the container were weaker than I wished they were. I knew a fight was going to happen, I had to snap out of my state of grief.
"We move together, firing in all directions," Nelson began to order. "Once we get to the stairs, we haul ass to the woods."
"No way," Bellamy rejected. "We are not leaving our people."
The door was hanging by a thread at this point. I ignored the few tears that escaped my eyes and reached my hands to my belt. I held a knife in each of them, preparing for whatever we were about to go through.
"Here they come," Bellamy announced. "Knock them out, tie them up. We take out enough, eventually they'll stop."
All of a sudden, there was complete silence. No more yelling, no more banging. I looked over to Bellamy who held the same face of confusion as I did.
"Is it over?" Echo asked from the unsettling stoppage.
"I don't know," I answered truthfully. It wouldn't make sense for this mayhem to end so abruptly. A small thud sounded from behind me, I turned to see hand enter the grate on top of the container and drop a canister in. Gas expanded within the walls and within a few seconds everyone around me was dropping unconscious. I hit the floor shortly after Bellamy did.
When I woke up, my mind was dazed. All my senses were flooding back to me as I realized I had a gag in my mouth once again. My hands were bound together by rope which made it hard to sit myself up on my knees, but not impossible. I looked around the room we were in. Bellamy was directly in front of me, the back of his body being the only part of him I could see.
"Good, you're all awake," A woman stated, she was wearing a long cloak and had neat hair. I looked next to me to see that Octavia was there. The rest of our group was bound and lined up on their knees as well. "Let's begin."
I watched as the woman knelt down in front of Layla, releasing the gag from her mouth. "Do you or do you not believe in the divinity of the Primes?" The woman asked her.
"You don't need a potion to find out my truth, witch," Layla spat. There was another man standing beside her, he held a cup with a long handle in one hand and a cloth in the other. "Primes are not Gods, they're liars. And murders."
The woman wasted no time in her next move. Layla's answer was not satisfactory enough to save her life. The women pulled out her knife and slit Layla's throat in one smooth motion. The sight of seeing Layla drop lifeless on the floor made my stomach twist into knots. Nelson's cry filled my ears and my nose was heavy with panting.
