CATHERINE'S POV
As I finished that, a portal opened and Charlie walked into my bedroom, just then I remembered that I was supposed to go with her. "Shit. I forgot!" I explained, guilty for forgetting her. "He looked like shit, but I made him feel better." Charlie started as she lay on the floor. That only happened when she was too stressed or sad or anxious. Damn, I really inherited shitty things. "Was he okay?" I dared to ask, not really knowing what to say. "Physically, he is excellent. Mentally, he's a bit confused." As she put her arm over her eyes, I knew she was about to cry. "It's understandable, Charlie. He thought he had sacrificed himself, just to wake up in a different era, where we have phones, internet and people is not as dumb as in the 40s." She sighed and turned to look at me. "I know, but there must be something we could do to make him feel a bit normal-wait." Her words were true and I felt how her mind was working to come up with something.
"Did they celebrate Thanksgiving in the 40s?" She asked and I turned to my phone. "Yeah, why?" My question brought a smile to her face. "For what he told me, S.H.I.E.L.D rarely ever goes to see him, so we could take the holiday to him?" That was a good idea and my smile told her I was on board. "We're going to need food." She said and we quietly went to the kitchen and looked for what we needed. The following morning, we heard that people from the kitchen were asking for a missing turkey and some other desserts, but we acted like we did not know a thing. I knew Jace noticed we were too secretive, but after our conversation, he was letting me handle Charlie. When the sun got really low, we took everything and opened a portal to Steve's location. We did not want to scare him so we knocked on the door. "Steve, is me. I brought company." Charlie whispered loud enough for him to hear and immediately he opened the door.
"Hello." He whispered again as he kept looking around in case it was an ambush. "Hey, remember what I told you when we first met?" Charlie was exuding calmness. "I should trust you." Charlie nodded and Steve looked at our hands. "We thought it would be fun to have dinner with you." I explained and he smiled at us and helped us to carry the things to the kitchen. "I'll set the table in the meantime." I said and got out of there. They had found some common ground and he trusted her more than anyone would trust me, so to avoid Steve's discomfort I walked out of the scene. When the table was ready, I walked back to the kitchen and I caught him staring at how she did things. A part of him was curious of Charlie. She was on her mistake part of her life and Steve needed some connection with the world and I had discovered there was not anyone better than Charlie. "Table is ready." I hated to interrupt, but Charlotte and I were in a tight schedule now.
We talked, we laughed and put him up to date on the things that had happened since the forties. He was surprised of all the political advances, women rights and the world itself. He seemed a bit calmer since the last time I saw him, but still his eyes showed that he was missing someone or maybe it was his old life. I could only imagine how it would be to wake up in a different time, with another life and with no one from my previous life around. Charlotte noticed it too, so whenever he started going down, she would come up with some other topic and he would smile again. My inner self told me he was confused and he of course felt alone. All his life had ended seventy years ago, or so he thought. He had lost his family way before he joined the military and then, he lost the one person he could trust and up to this day, he still missed his best friend. It was then, when I realized his pain. It was like my bond with Charlie. I would drive myself crazy if something happened to her.
I did not know if I could handle it the way he was handling it. Probably not. I was sure that I would look for her everywhere just to realize that she was not gone. I could not live without my parabatai. She had showed me a whole new life and I do not think I could make a day without her. My life without Charlie would suck.
