CATHERINE’S POV

Talking things with Charlie had this soothing response over me. I did not exactly know why, but for once, I could be fearless, I could show my strength and she would only hold my hand and somehow, I knew that eventually, everything would be okay for both of us. “Are you okay, though?” I asked as we tried to train. “I’m physically okay, but emotionally I’m drained. To be quite honest, I don’t know if I’ll make it the whole year.” Her confession threw me off, but I also knew that she was hiding something from me. “What?” I tried to sound like there was nothing happening, but suddenly I was scared. I was not ready for her to leave. “I’m strong and all, but I can’t handle toxic places.” As she went to the punching bag, I activated the bravery rune and followed her. “I just want to make clear that I will support whatever you do.” I found myself talking and she stopped hitting the bag. “You’re the only reason I’m still here. After the whole Leon-welcoming, I was so ready to leave, but you have been so kind and I want to be here for you, so at the moment, I’m here.” Those words almost made me cry and we were only interrupted when one soldier got into our training room. “You both are needed in the director’s office.” The smirk she had on was annoying, enough to set me off. “If I, were you, I wouldn’t be smiling like that, you bitch.” I hooked my arm to Charlie’s and pulled her out of the room. When we were near the office, I realized what had just happened and I did not know how to feel exactly. “You were all called here to talk about this whole mess your arrival had brought.” Evelyn talked and I was completely sure that Charlie was going to be kicked off the institute. “As I said this morning, some soldiers from this institute used their runes to harm another fellow soldier.” I could feel all the stares on her and I just kept my eyes on Evelyn to show that we did not care at all.
“As the contrary of most of you think, Miss Verlac was not the one who used her runes. It was actually Mr. Grantfury.” The gasp was lightly and I felt Charlie’s desperation. She wanted to get out of there and I noticed she was not feeling good. “He did not only used his runes but he also stabbed his opponent out of orders of Mr. Verlac.” She started sweating and she was moving in her spot, like if everything would have been spinning. I took my stele and activated my iratze rune so she could end the meeting at least. She seemed a bit better and then, we kept listening to the director’s words. “Not only that, both have been missing their technological training and for those reasons, I decided to punish them.” I took her hand and I felt at ease for a second, because I was about to freak out. “They are going to be sent to a new institute, they are going to lose their ranks, both are going to be combat instructors in other institutes.” I could not believe what I had just heard.
Leon and Kurt started complaining for the measures, but the director held her hand up and both shut up. “Both of you are going to own your punishment in the same way you broke the rules. Own your mistake, now, go pack your suitcase, in an hour some people will come for you.” After that, both left, not without bumping into Charlie. “Watch out, you idiots.” I said and she just shook her head to me, we were not in great odds to create more problems and she was right. “I understand you have something to say.” Evelyn talked to the soldier that had brought us here. “Yes. I just wanted to inform you something. As I was looking for Miss Verlac, I went to her room and I found some prohibited things there, such as a music player, a cellphone and books, all mundane things!” I wanted to roll my eyes so bad, but I tried to just listen carefully. Evelyn stood up and walked near her. “And you thought you could dig Miss Verlac. I see.”
The soldier was smirking again, almost like if she was revenging her friends for being stupid. Fucking hell, just kill me already. I could feel my energy going down to an annoying level, but then I felt Charlotte’s weight mainly on me, which made me realize that she was not feeling okay and it was not related to this whole thing.
